Once upon a time, about twenty years ago, when I was dining in KFC, someone accidentally spilled his drinks on my fried chicken. He’s still in ICU now.
Suffice to say, I take my fried chicken very seriously.
After all, you can waste your calories on yucky cai png, unpalatable burgers and rotten bubble tea, but wasting a single calorie on fried chicken is totally not worth it.
Which is why I suggested that we let our resident cat do this review, but the cat chickened out, so here I am with Popeyes Cereal Chicken.
And thank God it didn’t disappoint.
See, now our resident office cat is sad.
Popeyes Cereally Crispy Chicken
Last month, we wrote about this and for weeks, we failed to steal our boss’s credit card, and so didn’t get a chance to try it.
Known uncreatively as Cereally Crispy Chicken, the concept is simple: coat those zichar cereal on Popeyes’ iconic chicken.
I understand that cereal prawns are to die for in zichar, but cereal on fried chicken?
Well, on Popeyes’ Facebook Page, they look goody: but we all know that images are for illustration purpose only. Actual product might CB-ly differ.
Apparently, in this case, the actual product looks better.
First Look
Here, take a look at our Instagram and drool all you want first (oh, please drool at the chicken and not our colleague).
(Follow us on Instagram also leh)
Yes, it really looks appetizing.
Do note that we ordered it via Foodpanda, so the food has gone through millions of kilometres from Mars before reaching us. Yet they still look so perfect, almost like a chef has cooked it outside our office without us knowing.
Just so you know, our photographer didn’t have to painfully scoop the cereals and pour it on the chicken. They stuck on the chicken like ants on a rotten lizard.
And speaking of rotten lizard, does it taste like one?
Taste
And so, ever so gently, I took a bite with the fats in my body constantly reminding me that each bite would contribute significantly to my weight, so it’s better be worth it.
Holly crab.
Crab holly.
Our resident cat changed colour and stared at me again.
Actually, you can imagine the taste. It’s cereal Popeyes chicken.
But it’s the combination of the cereal and chicken that makes it worth every calorie.
First, the cereals: they’re sweet, crunchy and almost powder-like. Every one of them seemed to be grinded to the exact shape, therefore causing a consistent taste. The crumbliness isn’t pronounced as they blend into the chicken skin perfectly like a honeyed seasoning.
The chicken is the familiar Popeyes chicken, and that’s subjective: some love it while others won’t. The slightly salty skin makes everything more savoury; and when the skin is crispy as well, you can expect an extremely crunchy (and noisy) meal that’s to die for.
I’m telling you, it has already wowed me from the first bite.
But hold on.
The Cereally Crispy Chicken isn’t the star. Instead, it’s a “zingy chilli sauce”, which is so unheard of, our photographer didn’t even take an image of it.
Zingy Chilli Sauce
The meal comes with a sauce known as “Zingy Chilli Sauce”, and I only knew about it through a leaflet that comes with the delivery.
Not sure what the heck it is, but BOY THAT’S THE BEST-8XEST CHILLI SAUCE EVER.
I Googled the meaning of “zingy” and it turns out that it refers to something “exciting”, “attractive” or “piquant”. And so I Googled “piquant” and found this: “having a pleasantly sharp taste or appetizing flavour.”
That is accurate af.
The chilli sauce is sweet and tangy, akin to a bowl of Mala Hotpot condensed into a sauce and mixed with Gula Melaka. Unlike the usual chilli sauce, it stays in your mouth even after twenty years, and in a good way: I can still remember the strong taste of the sauce now.
In fact, it’s so goody, I’m willing to pay for that chilli sauce. I haven’t tried Lao Gan Ma chilli sauce but I’ve a feeling that it’s somewhat similar.
Unfortunately, we don’t have an image of it so let me zoom in on the sauce via Popeyes’ Facebook Page.
Yeah, this one. The unsung hero of the entire meal.
Overall: Worth It?
After singing so much praises to it and risk sounding like it’s a sponsored post (it’s not, by the way), what do you think?
I’ll say go for it. As many times as you want.
And remember the zingy chilli sauce.
