Recently, a pregnant elephant in India died after it ate fruit filled with firecrackers in the southern state of Kerala.
It was later discovered that the fruit bombs were meant to be a deterrent to wild animals, and that the elephant was not the intended target.
Still, the incident sparked outrage all over the world. Indian police arrested a plantation worker and are searching for two others for their involvement.
Someone Fed a Pregnant Cow With Food Filled with Firecrackers That Blew Up in Its Mouth
A pregnant cow’s jaw was blown off after it was allegedly fed a wheat flour ball laced with firecrackers, according to Hindustan Times.
The incident took place in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.
The cow’s owner, Gurdial Singh, posted a video of the injured animal a week later, accusing his neighbour of abuse.
So, what happened?
On 25 May, Singh’s cow was grazing in a field 20 meters from his house at 8.15pm when he heard an explosion. Upon reaching the site of the explosion, Singh discovered that his cow’s jaw had been blown off.
The poor cow managed to give birth to a healthy calf a few days later, but Singh said she’s unable to eat now because of her injured jaw.
Glucose is being administered to the cow now for her survival.

Neighbour Arrested
The video of the injured cow went viral on social media, with people calling for the perpetrator to be punished.
Local police later arrested Singh’s neighbour, Nand Lal Dhiman, on Sunday (5 June).
According to Times Now, the police had registered the case as involving mischief of maiming or killing cattle, and other relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act.
Why Are People Feeding Animals Food Laced With Explosives?
As previously mentioned, an elephant also ate a similar explosive-filled-fruit and died as a result.
But why are people feeding animals food laced with explosives?
According to Hindustan Times, some farmers in Himachal resort to this practice to keep wild animals, especially boars, off their fields.
The firecracker-filled fruit that the pregnant elephant ate was reportedly for these wild boars.
As my colleague explained, losing a few crops can be devastating for some farmers in India. And while there’s no excuse for this horrific crime, this isn’t a black and white affair.
Hopefully, farmers devise a more humane tactic to keep wild animals off their fields so they can end this cruel practice.
