Hospitals are not a great place to be.
Reader: Duh, if you’re there, you’re sick.
Yes, but even as a visitor, hospitals can be depressing. You’re constantly reminded of your own mortality, as you see all the old and sick people struggling around you.
But we go there because we have to. It’s the place we go to soothe all our medical troubles.
Unless they don’t have a bed, that is.
Pregnant Woman Dies After Hospital Refused To Admit Her Because They Had ‘No Bed’
A 39-year-old pregnant woman from China recently died after a hospital refused to admit her because they had “no bed”.
The woman’s husband brought her to the hospital on Oct 30 because she had some facial swelling. The doctors examined her and told her that she needed to be hospitalised, though they didn’t say why.
The problem was, they didn’t have a bed. Isn’t that a little like going to work in an office with no chair?
Boss: OK, I get it, you’re not a fan of standing up while working. I’ll get you a chair soon.
Me: You said that SIX YEARS AGO.
Boss: STANDING IS GOOD FOR THE HEART. Your body will thank me later.
So, because the hospital had no bed, they told her they couldn’t admit her and asked her to find another hospital.
Decided to wait at the hospital
However, all of the woman’s previous check-ups were at this hospital, so she and her husband decided to wait in the hospital hoping the doctors would change their minds.
They did not.
At 1pm in the afternoon, the frustrated couple decided to go home and were about to leave when the woman’s water broke. So, they had no choice but to turn back, and the woman was put in a wheelchair.
According to China Press, the woman later started bleeding on the wheelchair, but no doctor attended to her.
30 minutes later, a space finally opened up for her and she was hospitalised.
Performed C-section
A while later, the pregnant woman was brought to an operating room at 2pm where doctors performed a C-section on her. The newborn baby was examined by doctors and found to be suffering from a pulmonary infection. It also had difficulty breathing.
The woman wasn’t doing so well, either. She had high blood pressure and uterine bleeding, and needed to be transferred to the intensive care unit where her husband was told to monitor her closely.
For the next six days, even though they were paying for medical suppplies, the family couldn’t see their newborn baby.
Sadly, the woman passed away on Nov 5. Her body was cremated two days later, but the hospital didn’t announce the cause of death even then.
Why are they being so shady?
The family accused them of delaying the treatment which they saw as a “dereliction of duty”, leading to the woman’s death.
Even to that accusation, the hospital has not responded. The authorities are investigating the issue.
Some netizens have accused the hospital of being more concerned with financial matters than “medical ethics”. Well, they may have a point. Hospitals, understandably have to be run like a business, but their main purpose is to treat the sick and infirm.
We hope that the hospital will be held responsible for their actions and that the woman’s family will be able to pull through this harrowing period.
