Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam posted on Facebook on Sunday morning, 4 May 2025, stating that as the dust of the general election settles, one thing is very clear: the real winner is Singapore.

Unity Despite Political Differences

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam took to Facebook on Sunday (4 May 2025) morning to share his thoughts as the general election concluded.

He stated that regardless of who voters supported, Singaporeans remain united, making Singapore the true winner of the election.

He noted that Singaporeans stand together in hoping for a better future for the country, despite differences in voting choices.

“We have seen neither a loss of trust in politics nor the sharp polarisation of views that engulfs many other countries. Long may this remain the case,” he wrote.

The President praised all parties and candidates for their dedication during the election, highlighting that many newcomers brought fresh thinking and talent to the political scene.

He also thanked citizens for their calm and mature approach to following the campaign and making their choices.

Formation of the New Government

President Tharman announced that he has sent a letter to People’s Action Party (PAP) Secretary-General Lawrence Wong, congratulating him for leading the PAP to a strong mandate, and formally inviting him to form the new government.

Looking ahead to the new Parliament, President Tharman expressed hope for thoughtful and respectful policy debates between the ruling and the opposition parties’ MPs, as both sides work together to build a more promising future for Singaporeans.

The President stressed that Singapore’s future should firmly maintain racial harmony, continue to earn respect internationally, and provide opportunity and dignity to every citizen.

He also hopes that Singapore will cultivate and encourage passionate individuals with independent thinking and creativity will join in pushing the nation to greater heights.

“Our best years are still ahead,” President Tharman concluded.
