First was the cop, who was supposed to protect vulnerable domestic helpers from abuse. Now, here’s a primary school teacher who’s supposed to be kind and nurturing towards young children budding into maturity.
Abusers can really hide themselves well.
Pri Sch Teacher & Husband Facing Trial For Abuse
Nachammai Selva Nachiappan, 39, was tried in a district court on Monday (May 3) for allegations of abuse towards her domestic helper.
She allegedly threw a hot ladle at her helper, Hla Hla Myaing, 37, a mere 11 days after Ms Hla Hla Myaing started working for the family.
Nachammai is also accused of hitting her helper in the face with a hanger, among other acts that totalled to five charges, for which she is facing trial.
Her husband, 41-year-old Arunachalam Muthiah, faces three separate charges for kicking and punching the helper.
Through an interpreter, Ms Hla Hla Myaing testified that, on 25 June 2018, the first assault occurred when she and her female employer were the only two people in the kitchen.
“[Nachammai] was expecting me to cook [but] I don’t know how to cook Indian food,” she explained to the court.
According to her testimony, Nachammai then threw a hot ladle at her, injuring her right hand.
The series of abuses did not last long: in early August the same year, the couple brought the helper back to the maid agency, apparently because they were dissatisfied with her work.
Well, I’m not sure if you should be the ones to be dissatisfied.
Ms Hla Hla Myaing is now deployed to a separate household, where no abuse has presumably happened.
The Ministry of Education (MOE), in a statement to The Straits Times, announced that it would examine the incident surrounding Nachammai, and issue penalties in accordance with internal disciplinary guidelines.
Dismissal from service is a viable option for Ms Nachammai, according to an MOE spokesman.
In a separate incident, the interpreter engaged by the court for Ms Hla Hla Myaing was queried after attempting to pass her some money, which he told the court was “loose change” for lunch, since she only had a $50 note.
He was substituted as the interpreter, since interpreters are prohibited from assisting witnesses in any manner.
The joint trial of the couple will resume today (4 May), for an offense carrying a maximum penalty of 10-and-a-half years and fines or caning.
