As much as Apple was known as the ‘lifetime investment’ phone, said mostly to justify the hole that is left in our wallets, they are not alone, for it is the time of the year where the competitive spirit reigns again, and this time…
It’s a game of prices.
(No, we’re not talking about Samsung Galaxy Fold or Huawei Mate X. Those aren’t just in the game: their prices are out of the game)
Samsung, by tradition, releases a new series of flagship smartphones at the start of every year, in lieu with the sense of renewal and freshness that accompanies the season.
Though such a season may not be too fresh for our wallets.
Something For Everyone
Like taking selfies?
No problem.
The new Samsung Galaxy S10 never seem to let one down, having two, three or four cameras at the back of the phone, depending on which model you plan to buy.
And if that isn’t enough, the front of the S10+ has two camera lenses… you know, when your other face wants a selfie too. On a serious note, the second lens allows a more in-depth portrait shot to be taken through a 8 megapixel sensor.
In summary, the S10 features a 6.1-inch display, three rear cameras and a single front-facing camera.
The S10 Plus, meanwhile, is a bit larger with a 6.4-inch screen. The bigger display is accommodated with a higher-capacity battery (a 4,100-mAh battery compared to the Galaxy S10’s 3,400-mAh one).
If The Price Is Right
Did I mention that it was a season of renewal and freshness?
Well, it is also the season to keep your Chinese New Year angpows closer.
“Prices will start from S$1,078 for the Galaxy S10e with a smaller 5.8-inch display, S$1,298 for the mid-tier Galaxy S10 with a 6.1-inch display and up to a whopping S$2,198 for the top-tier Galaxy S10+ 1TB-capacity model with the largest 6.4-inch display.”
Andddd that is about all the money I have.
But hey, who still buys phone without contract?
Our Dear Telcos’ Prices
So, would the price still look super-high-SES if you recontract?
Turns out that on average, you might still need to fork out a cool thousand dollars even if you’re willing to sign two years of your life away for $70 a month.
Cool.
Here are the prices lest you’re a Samsung fanboy / fangirl who wants everything Samsung, but couldn’t fathom the price of Galaxy Fold and therefore are looking at the S10 instead.

Galaxy S10+
For a $68.90 plan, you will thus need to fork out $468 for a 128GB Galaxy S10, or $568 for a 128GB Galaxy S10+.

Galaxy S10+
For a $75 plan, you will thus need to fork out $329 for a 128GB Galaxy S10, or $429 for a 128GB Galaxy S10+.
At the time of writing, M1 has not come out with their price plan for S10.
In lieu with the foldable and 5G phones, it is no doubt that prices for phones are only going to rise with the next few years. However, it is also important to note that 128GB (a heck load of data) and FIVE camera lenses on a single device is pretty much the most impressive breakthrough in smartphone-verse, making the money worth.
Yet, until I can afford it, I’ll be holding onto my second-hand phones and living on the memory when Blackberry was the thing.
(Editor’s note: My young Jedi, in my days, Nokia 3310 was the thing)
