PSA: Email Sent By ‘Iras’ About Tax Refund Is A Scam

Everyone has an uncle they’ve muted on WhatsApp.

You know the one I’m talking about. The one who sends you ‘urgent’ messages about the latest scams, killer goats in Iceland, and how water can actually cure cancer.

But, as you know, even a broken clock is right twice a day, and while your uncle may not be as accurate as a broken clock, he may be right about the latest scam.

PSA: Email Sent By ‘Iras’ About Tax Refund Is a Scam

The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (Iras) has warned the public to ignore a message that’s been circulating on WhatsApp lately about a tax refund.

The message includes an image of a tax refund email supposedly from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (Iras).

Image: Iras

The scam email is titled “Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore-Refund-Online-Confirmation” and it even has the Iras logo next to it.

It claims that the recipient of the message is eligible for a “236.51 $” tax refund.

What kind of scammer forgets to put the dollar sign in front of the number?

Victims are then instructed to click on a link to download a tax refund form and complete it to obtain the refund.

The scam also states that refunds can be delayed for various reasons including the submission of invalid records or applications made past the deadline.

Iras has advised the public to ignore the image, and not respond to or further circulate it.

Sadly, the same uncle who sent you a warning about the Iras scam may have also sent you the actual scam message, because he forwards literally every message he receives.

So, look out for this message or any message that asks for your personal details or banking information, even if it’s that beautiful lady you fell in love with online who now needs $10,000 for her dog’s surgery.
