The upcoming election is going to be an uphill battle, what with the Covid-19 pandemic, but political parties are still pushing ahead with their plans.

Elections can be expensive affairs.

In GE2015, the PAP spent $8.3 million to contest in 89 seats.

The Workers’ Party (WP) spent $730,000 contesting in 28 seats.

The remaining opposition parties spent $1.8 million in total.

Progress Singapore Party (PSP) Raised $500K For Elections, Appeals For $500K More

PSP, led by Dr Tan Cheng Bock, has been hitting the headlines lately.

Previously, it was reported that West Coast GRC is going to be a heated playground in the upcoming GE.

It will be witness to a three-way fight between the PAP, Reform Party (RP) and the PSP.

In a virtual outreach session on 17 Jun, PSP said that they are looking to raise S$1 million for the upcoming GE.

In the previous outreach session, Party leader Tan Cheng Bock had appealed for donations, saying that the party is “short of finances”.

He had said, then, that running in “an election of this magnitude is not an easy task”.

Emcee Craig Teo told the people who tuned in to the session that the party has already reached its halfway mark, and they’re looking to raise more.

He added that taking part in the General Election is “an expensive affair”, and that the money will be spent on printing posters, banners and flyers during the campaigning season.

Had Appealed For Funds On Facebook

On 11 June, PSP had posted an appeal for donations on their Facebook page.

People who want to donate can do so either via cheque or PayNow.

It was added that the record-keeping requirement for the donations supersedes (read: is more important) than PDPA, so you’ll have to provide your full information.

However, they assure, all information will be kept confidential.

When Is GE2020?

While the exact date of the upcoming GE hasn’t been announced yet, political analysts in Singapore are predicting that it could likely happen next month during the school holidays.

That’s when, the analysts said, school facilities are empty and available for use as polling stations.

The only setback to the election is if the Covid-19 situation worsens. Because if the situation worsens, people are kicked back into CB, and the government calls for an election?

Hell is going to break loose.

However, it seems like things are going well and Singapore’s Covid-19 situation is being kept under control so well we’re entering Phase 2 in one day’s time.
