The Covid-19 pandemic has forced many restrictions upon us.
No large gatherings, no karaoke sessions and no coughing into strangers’ meals at the coffee shop.
Reader: You mean you used to do that last thing?
Please stop bringing up my past, dear reader.
One restriction that has been the bane of bookworms and students for the last few months is the limit for dwell times in libraries across the country, as well as a reduced operating capacity.
Whether you wanted to study, read, or look through the catalogue, you only had a limited time to do so.
Thankfully, after the country shifts to Phase 3 of its safe reopening, this restriction will finally be eased.
From 4 Jan, You Can Stay in Any Public Library Without Time Limit During Weekdays
Restrictions on capacity and dwell times in public libraries will be relaxed and more public programmes will be resumed next year, the National Library Board (NLB) said in a media statement on Tuesday (29 Dec).
From 4 Jan 2021, NLB will further increase the operating capacity in its 26 public libraries, the National Archives of Singapore, and the Former Ford Factory.
“We will also lift the existing dwell time limits on weekdays. As a result, patrons will be able to enjoy our physical facilities for extended periods on weekdays, without the need to book online.”
That’s right, book lovers and students can now stay at the library for as long as they want, as long as it’s a weekday.
Rules for Weekend Visits
Dwell time limits will remain in place for weekends, however, to manage the large crowds, NLB said.
On Saturdays and Sundays, patrons can visit the National Library, regional libraries (in Jurong, Tampines, and Woodlands), the National Archives of Singapore, and the Study Lounge at Level 5 of the National Library Building for up to three hours. As for public libraries, patrons can only spend up to two hours inside.
Those planning to visit a library on the weekend are encouraged to make online bookings here.
Resumption of Public Programmes
There’s also good news for kids who love to hear a good story.
Public programmes such as storytelling and talks for professionals will also gradually resume, with the exception of guided tours.

Safe Distancing Measures
In its statement, NLB reassured patrons that it will continue to implement safety measures amid the pandemic.
“To ensure the safety of our patrons, safe distancing measures, capacity controls, and frequent disinfection of high touch points will continue to be implemented in all our premises”.
Patrons are reminded to wear their masks at all times when visiting libraries, unless they want to be denied entry or end up on Goody Feed.
