SCDF to Sound Public Warning System Siren on 15 September 2024 at 6:20pm

On 15 September 2024 (it’s a Sunday FYI), if you hear a siren, relax.

There’s need to panic.

SCDF to Sound Public Warning System Siren on 15 September 2024 at 6:20pm

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will be sounding the “Important Message” signal through the island-wide network of Public Warning System (PWS) sirens on 15 September 2024 at 6:20pm.

This minute-long sounding exercise is conducted annually on 15 February and 15 September.

Now, by right, when you hear the “Important Message” signal, you should tune in immediately to any local radio station or free-to-air Mediacorp TV channel for a brief message on the PWS.

Pretty sure all of us do that.

The signal will also sound for 20 seconds on all smartphones that have the SGSecure mobile app, provided the app’s notification and alert settings are enabled. This will be accompanied by a brief text message about the PWS sounding.

What is the Public Warning System?

The PWS is a network of over 2,000 sirens placed at strategic points throughout Singapore by SCDF. Its purpose is to warn the public of imminent threats that could endanger lives and property.

In addition to the “Important Message” signal, the PWS has two other signals:

  • “Alarm” Signal: Sounded when an air raid or shelling is imminent
  • “All Clear” Signal: Sounded when the threat is over
