A massive gas pipeline fire erupted in Putra Heights, Malaysia, on 1 April 2025, injuring 33 people and forcing nearby residents to evacuate their homes during Eid celebrations.

Gas Pipeline Leak Causes Towering Inferno in Putra Heights

Thirty-three people were injured after a fire broke out at a gas pipeline operated by state energy firm Petronas near Kuala Lumpur.

Six of the injured individuals required hospitalisation, according to the fire department.

The towering flames were visible from Subang Jaya, with the massive inferno forcing people from their homes during Eid celebrations.

Seven residents had to be rescued after several homes caught fire due to the incident.

A spokesperson for the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Station confirmed they received a distress call at 8.10 AM.

“The fire is located along Jalan Putra Harmoni. Teams from the Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Puchong fire stations were deployed and are active on-site,” the spokesperson said.

According to a fire department statement, the inferno was caused by “a gas pipeline leak stretching approximately 500m.”

Petronas Confirms Pipeline Isolation and Temporary Closure of Nearby Stations

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) confirmed that the fire occurred at Petronas Gas Bhd’s (PGB) main pipeline near Putra Heights, Puchong, Selangor, Malaysia.

The company stated that the affected pipeline has been isolated, and the valve to the affected pipeline has been shut off. All relevant stakeholders have been informed of the situation.

“We are currently working closely with the local authorities to manage the situation, and we will provide additional information in due course as the investigation is still being carried out,” Petronas said in a statement.

Three nearby retail stations — PS Putra Heights, PS KM2 LDP and PS Putra Bestari — were not affected by the fire but have been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

The company stated that the safety of the surrounding community and environment and the security of gas supply to the nation continue to be its priority.

Subang Jaya MP Wong Chen confirmed in a statement that the fire had broken out at a petrol station in Putra Heights.

“All citizens are advised to be on full alert. We will provide more Bomba (Fire and Rescue Department) updates when received. Bomba helicopter is also on the way,” he said.

One resident who lives about 200m away from the fire told The Star newspaper: “All of a sudden, we heard a loud bang and then total chaos. We immediately left the house and soon saw other residents leaving too.”
