A video showed a man swinging a sword at people and at a car in Punggol and it went viral on social media almost immediately.
It isn’t our first time seeing crazed blade-wielding people, but it’s always newsworthy whenever it happens.
Thankfully, we don’t have another blade-wielder situation on our hands, since this was actually a staged scene for Mediacorp. Here’s what happened.
Man Swinging Blade In Punggol
Nope, it’s not in Yishun this time.
In the videos, a man wearing a grey long-sleeved shirt and long pants can be seen swinging a sword around. A street sign showed that this happened at Sumang Lane, which is in Punggol.
The man can be seen dragging his sword on the road, then suddenly running while raising the sword. He swung the sword at a stationary black Mercedes, before falling to the ground.
A woman can be seen getting out of the Mercedes, which the man then got up and lunged toward. The woman then hides, and a man comes out of the driver’s side of the car.
Mediacorp: Filming for ‘Healing Heroes’
Mediacorp has since responded, saying that this viral video is actually a scene being filmed for the Channel 8 drama ‘Healing Heroes’.
A signage was placed around the filming area saying “Filming in Progress”, which wasn’t recorded in the viral videos. There were also production crew dressed in visibility vests.
This means that those who posted the videos decided to omit the context… for the shock factor, I guess?
“We apologise for any alarm caused and seek the understanding of members of the public to refrain from circulating videos without context,” stated Mediacorp.
Additionally, one of the MPs for Punggol has also reassured residents on Facebook that this was not a real incident.

Residents Unhappy, Labels It ‘Inappropriate’
While many residents said they were enjoying the free show and behind-the-scenes of the drama, some residents were unhappy about this filming.
More specifically, they were unhappy that their children were exposed to such inappropriate behaviour like ‘samurai slashing’.
Err, your children will see it on Channel 8 anyway…
Most residents also said that it was obvious that this scene was for filming, since there were lots of filming equipment around.
