Couple conflicts are, for the most part, pretty routine. They lose their tempers over some petty issue, start banging doors for no real reason, take some time to cool off and are back to being lovebirds in a while.
It’s a whole cycle.
But sometimes, couple conflicts can spiral out of control…
Like the following case.
After A Quarrel with His Wife, Man Drove Aggressively to “Frighten” Her & Caused an Accident Instead
On 9 January 2022, Chinese national Chang Qing, 45, was having a few drinks with his wife, Ms Lin Jin, at a coffee shop at Block 422 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 when they lost their cool at each other.
Things got so heated that other patrons had to intervene. Someone even called the police.
The couple ultimately decided to return home.
Their quarrel, however, made an untimely comeback while Chang was driving. And he made sure to make his anger known by accelerating the car and driving across both lanes of Ang Mo Kio Street 42.
The car ended up hitting the kerb on the other side.
And that was when police arrived at the scene. Sergeant Zulaikha Mohd Nasir and her colleague, who were initially dispatched when the aforementioned someone called the police, saw the collision and made a stop.
Sgt Zulaikha then got off her car and went towards Chang’s, but the latter was busy reversing.
To prevent him from moving any more, the sergeant dashed in front of his car before moving to the side window. But Chang was not entertaining any of her knocks.
He proceeded to make a right turn, a manoeuvre that forced the sergeant to leap out of the way, before driving off.
Chang was ultimately apprehended at Woodlands after police caught up with him and subjected him to a breathalyser test.
Sentencing
Chang later confessed that he had merely wanted to scare his wife.
It was an act of frustration, he said.
He, however, admitted to seeing a figure in the corner of his eye when he made the right turn.
The prosecutor requested a jail term of eight to 12 weeks and disqualification from driving for two years for Chang, stating that Sgt Zulaikha could have been seriously hurt.
In response, the accused’s lawyer, Thomas Tham, stated that Chang had not deliberately committed the act, and that he was a first-time offender.
Stressed out by his wife’s chiding, Tham stated, Chang was not in his best state at the time.
The Chinese national was eventually sentenced to an imprisonment term of four weeks, alongside a ban from driving for two years.
He’s currently out on $2,000 bail and intends to appeal.
Not the Most Ridiculous Thing
At first glance, one would think, “Driving your car so recklessly just to scare your wife? Ridiculous.” But news flash;
That’s not the most ridiculous couple-related thing to have happened.
Back in 2022, a couple was conversing heatedly in Chinese in a private-hire vehicle when the man suddenly leapt out of the moving car.
Yes, he leapt out. Of a moving car.
The private-hire driver, Sidhu, was shocked and stopped the car, understandably so, but incredibly the man was still trying to run away even with wounds on his arm and leg.
The wife then chased after him, and they resumed their argument after the occurrence of an entire death-defying stunt that Jackie Chan himself would have been proud of.
Talk about priorities.
