You’ve gone to a minimart to buy some soy milk, but the cashier says you can’t purchase anything because you’re not wearing a mask.
What do you do?
a) Rush back home and get a mask
b) Cover your mouth with your hand and hope the cashier won’t spot the difference
c) Go home, sleep away your frustration, and return the next day with a mask over your face
Whatever option you chose, it would certainly be better than what this 53-year-old man did.
Racist Man Goes Viral During Circut Breaker
In case you’ve blocked out the entire circuit breaker to forget the all the loneliness, despair, and lack of bubble tea, here’s what happened.
In April, during the first week of the circuit breaker, Mohamed Ali Ramly left his home to buy some soy milk.
However, he had forgotten to wear his mask, which was mandatory by that time.
So when he visited three shops intending to buy his soy milk, he was turned away.
He then visited Li Li Cheng Minimart at Block 651, Jurong West Street 61, to try his luck for a fourth time.
After all, fourth time’s the charm, right?
But the cashier apologetically told him that she couldn’t serve him: “Sorry, no mask cannot”.
The man was triggered, and began verbally abusing her, and the cashier started filming him.
“What the f*** man. Eh f*** you la. Ask your f***ing president to go to hell man”, the man said.
But that wasn’t enough for the man. He had to exhibit his racial prejudice as well.
“Eh you Chinese ah. F***ing hell man. All the virus come from you guys la. F*** you Chinese la you.”
The woman warned the man that she would post the video on Facebook, and the man said that he had simply forgotten his mask and wanted to buy one item.
A netizen who viewed the video lodged a police report the day after.
Fined $4k
The 53-year-old was fined S$4,000 on Wednesday (9 Dec) after pleading guilty in a district court to the following charges:
- breaching a Covid-19 control order
- using abusive language
- wounding the minimart employee’s racial feelings
In his defence, the man’s lawyer said her client was trying to get a drink for his wife who was “suffering from bodily pain”.
The lawyer, Ms Yamuna Balakrishnan, said Mohamed Ali had visited three shops prior to the Jurong minimart and had pleaded for understanding, but was ignored.
“Due to that moment of losing his temper, it resulted in those acts… Our client is extremely remorseful and is pleading guilty today. He even apologised that very minute, respectfully said ‘thank you very much’ and left the shop”, Ms Balakrishnan said.
The man works as a musician, but has no income as he’s no longer able to give live performances.
His wife, a nurse at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, is also unable to work after suffering an injury.
For the charge of wounding racial feelings, Mohamed Ali could have been jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.
In a multicultural society like Singapore, racism simply cannot be tolerated.
