Raindrop cake: would you want to spend $8 on this?

If you are on a diet, you might be interested to know more about this dessert that has taken the world by storm. Created by a New Yorker Darren Wong, this raindrop cake looks exactly like a giant raindrop. How does it taste, you may ask? In the words of the creator, “It tastes like eating a giant raindrop, duh!” Although it does look quite pretty and unique, would you pay a whopping USD8 for this? It’s just water after all!

Alright, granted, it does come with brown sugar syrup and roasted soybean flour. Many people have commented that it is the perfect pairing and tastes really good. The raindrop itself has a texture just like a transparent pudding, or the agar-jelly that you can make by yourself at home.

This cake was inspired by the Mizu Shingen Mochi from Japan, which in our opinion, looks exactly the same. It raised quite a huge fuss in Japan back in 2014. We are a little confused as to why the word used by the raindrop cake creator is “inspired”, when it should be more like “copied”. The mochi also comes with soybean powder and brown sugar syrup. Hmm, sounds familiar. The only thing that is probably different is that the Japanese dessert is served with a drink – none other than matcha.

We are not sure why anyone would pay USD8 to eat water in a jelly form. If we had to spend that much money on water, I think we might cry tears of regret. One thing we are very sure of is that, this water-based dessert will taste better than our tears despite its tastelessness.
