Razer Giving 5 Million Masks to People in S’pore for Free But They Must Register for Razer Pay

Razer products are pretty good.

Not that I know what they are like since they’re also pretty expensive. The occasional $10 discount to persuade me is pretty cool I guess.

Yeah, not cool for the low-SES. I’ll consider it when my SES status change.

But the good side of their expensive products is that the company is rich. Rich enough to start giving out free masks. Did I say it’s 5 million masks in the title?

Planning To Expand To 10 Million Masks a Month

That’s right. They even want to double it. Here’s what their mask production facility looks like, taken from Min-Liang Tan AKA big boss of Razer’s Facebook:

(Random questions: Is the hyphen officially part of his name on his NRIC? Does he still need to serve ICT? Where does he buy his black T-shirt?)

But current productions are only able to produce 5 million a month, and they are working with local manufacturer Sunningdale Tech to expand that.

Razer has received interest from firms in both Singapore and outside Singapore, but only excess supply would be allocated overseas.

So someone asked Razer if masks will be part of their business.

They actually didn’t outright deny it.

Mr Lee Li Meng, chief strategy officer of Razer, said it is “still early days” and then continued, “I think we are focusing on making sure that the first reason why we’re doing this is to make sure that we are able to supply the masks.

“We will see and observe the situation.”

As long as we don’t start seeing $200 masks, I think I’m actually fine with that.

I mean, it’s not like the company has ever produced non-gaming products, like a toaster-

Oh.

Given Through Network of Vending Machines

20 vending machines will be set up at different places, including at all malls under Frasers Property Retail and JustCo co-working spaces by 1 June 2020.

Examples of malls under Frasers Property Retail are Century Square and Causeway Point.

They hope this will complement the reusable masks the gahmen is giving out.

“There are times potentially where you leave your house and you realise, ‘Oh no, I don’t have the mask’. We think that this is something that we can do … to ensure that society stays safe,” said Mr Lee.

You’re probably sharp-eyed enough to notice that logo on the bottom left corner, so here it is:

But Need To Register For Razer Pay To Redeem

Registering verifies your identity, which will then issue a QR coupon code valid for three months that you can scan to collect your mask.

The registering part brought concern to people, of course. By now the saying that “data is worth more than oil” is pretty well known. (And this was coined when oil was expensive.) This is not just a concern of privacy, but also that Razer can potentially use the data for huge upturns of profit later on.

Min-Liang Tan Replied

This prompted the taokay of Razer to reply on both Reddit (this one needs verification, but the user is tagged “Chief Gamer” on the Razer subreddit) and Facebook.

According to him, this is the best way for distribution to every Singaporean and residents, since it ensures there’s no hoarding. He’s even surprised that a non-government organisation is able to do this.

A commenter then suggested that he could have just let the government distribute the masks if fraud was a concern. The commenter then pointed out that the people who need it the most, like old people, may not know how to use the app.

To make things worse, their given scenario is “There are times potentially where you leave your house and you realise, ‘Oh no, I don’t have the mask'”. The commenter pointed out that Razer Pay has a one to seven working days verification after document submission, which defeats the whole purpose of the scenario.

Lastly, the commenter suggested donating to medical workers.

Nevertheless, it’s free masks, and given that we’re going to wear masks in public until 2086, so let’s not complain lah.
