You know him as Ip Man. Or the blind Asian kungfu dude in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In any case, you’re almost definitely familiar with his martial arts prowess on the silver screen. But did you know, those skills are not special effects?
Dude really knows how to fight, is what I’m saying.
In fact, years ago, Donnie Yen actually beat the snot out of 8 grown men. Note: this was way before the famous scene from the first Ip Man film, where he fights 10 martial artists.
The story goes that in the late 1990s, Donnie Yen and his then-girlfriend actress Joey Meng were enjoying themselves at a nightclub in Hong Kong, when a bunch of dudes took an interest in the actress.
They then made the mistake of harassing her right in front of Donnie Yen.
To be fair, he did warn them to back off. Unfortunately, that just meant that the men proceeded to make the second mistake of ignoring the warnings.
Which was followed closely by the third mistake. Donnie Yen and Joey Meng tried to leave the club, presumably for the personal safety of the gang of guys, but they didn’t let up.
They pursued the couple, and tried to attack Donnie Yen. They tried to attack Donnie Yen.
Needless to say, all 8 men woke up in a hospital.
After the scuffle, Donnie Yen was arrested, then released shortly since it was technically self-defence. After all, the 8 men attacked first. It wasn’t really Donnie Yen’s fault that all 8 of them couldn’t fight.
