That’s what happened in Kembangan.

The “Red Canal” in Kembangan is Caused By a Car Wash Company

The National Environment Agency (NEA) was informed of a 400-metre long “red discharge” that was spotted in a canal in Kembangan on two instances, on 13 October 2024 and 17 October 2024.

After being notified on the first occasion of 13 October 2024, NEA officers monitored the canal the following day.

According to NEA, there had been a lot of rain, and on 14 October 2024, the water in the canal was found to be normal, showing no signs of the red discharge, and the water’s dissolved oxygen and pH levels were within normal ranges.

On 17 October 2024, NEA officers received another notification.

The following morning, they conducted inspections and identified the source as a car washing and grooming business. NEA acted swiftly to curb this issue and stated that, “The company was instructed to stop the discharge into the open drain immediately and clean up the public drains that were affected by their discharge.”

But what led to the red colour?

NEA then revealed that the discharge was found to be “red foam car wash conditioning liquid”.

A red foam car washing conditioning liquid is typically used for cleaning and conditioning a car’s exterior.

It’s a specialised, foamy shampoo that gently leaves dirt and grime without stripping wax or protective coatings.

Its conditioning agents also help enhance shine, maintain the paint’s smoothness and add a layer of protection, often being used as a pre-wash to prep the surface before a more detailed wash.
