Remains of Missing S’porean Man Recovered 9 Months After Taiwan Earthquake

The remains of a missing Singaporean man were found 9 months after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Taiwan’s Hualien county in April last year. His partner’s body has yet to be found.

According to Taiwanese media, the human hip bone was found on a riverbed beneath a landslide area by a local named Wang. He immediately reported the discovery to the police.

After nearly 4 hours, the police and forensic team finally managed to retrieve the bone safely.

The remains were confirmed to belong to Mr Sim following forensic analysis and after the DNA of the remains were matched with that of his son.

Further investigations conducted by the authorities also concluded that the couple was likely swept away by a landslide during the earthquake, and the Mr Sim’s remains were carried by the flow of the river and debris to the site of its discovery.

Hualien’s district court has announced that it will return the remains to Mr Sim’s family on a later date.

The Tragedy

Mr Sim Hwee Kok and his partner Ms Neo Siew Choo were the only two people reported missing whom the authorities could not find after the catastrophe.

The couple were last seen on surveillance footage, disembarking a bus near the Shakadang Trail located within Taroko National Park, a popular natural attraction, 40 minutes before the earthquake hit.

The mountainous environment, together with the earthquake, was an extremely dangerous combination, as several landslides occurred in the area, and rocks tumbled down the valleys.

Searches for the couple were unsuccessful, thus they were officially presumed dead last month. The Taiwanese authorities had issued death certificates for them.

The earthquake is one of the strongest recorded ones to strike Taiwan in 25 years. More than 1000 aftershocks were recorded, some of them even reaching magnitudes of 6.0.

There were at least 19 fatalities, including Mr Sim, and more than 1100 were injured.
