Food delivery has sort of become the norm after the COVID-19 pandemic. Even as safe management measures are scrapped, people continue to order in because it’s so convenient and quick.
However, food delivery workers report facing more challenges in their line of work—some claimed their pay was as low as $90 for 11 hours of work.
Low pay isn’t the only problem they have to face, though. Reportedly, a delivery rider had the wheels of his bike clamped while delivering food and had to pay $107 to remove it.
Not Allowed To Park In Condo
Recently, delivery riders have complained about their difficulties in delivering orders to Eight Riversuites, a condominium located at 4 Whampoa East.
In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, a rider surnamed Fang said that the condo’s management does not allow delivery riders to park within its premises.
Riders were forced to illegally park their vehicles on the pavement outside the premises to circumvent this, though they’d risk getting fined for doing so.
Another food delivery rider, known only as J, agreed with Mr Fang.
According to him, the riders had tried to talk to the condo’s security guards about the parking situation and urged them to allow the riders to speak with the condo’s management.
However, the management refused to answer their queries or offer an explanation. Security also reiterated the former’s decision to ban food delivery riders from parking inside the condo.
Wheel Clamped After Delivering to Condo
Food delivery rider Zheng shared with the Chinese media outlet that the condo management had previously allowed riders to park behind the guardhouse.
However, they changed their minds about three weeks ago and banned riders entirely from parking within the premises.
Mr Fang said that two months ago, riders were even allowed to park in the condo’s car park.
He cited an occasion when the car park there was full, and he’d tried to park his bike at a side, where it would not block other vehicles.
Upon returning from delivering the order, however, he found a condo management staff trying to clamp the wheels of his vehicle.
Luckily, he arrived in time to stop them, but apparently, his friend didn’t share his luck.
According to Fang, his friend had the wheels of his vehicle clamped while making a delivery at the condo. He ended up having to pay $107 to remove the lock—almost a day’s worth of earnings.
LTA Officers Surround Illegally Parked Bike
In a video shared online, officers from the Land Transport Authority can be seen surrounding a bike parked illegally on the pavement outside Eight Riversuites.
The person who shared the video, J, said this happened because the management forced delivery riders to park outside on the footpath.
The LTA’s website states that vehicles like motorcycles, bikes and e-bikes, commonly used in deliveries, must be appropriately parked at designated spots.
However, the riders were left with nowhere to park since the management did not allow them to park within the condo’s premises.
The management did not answer queries by Shin Min Daily News when asked to comment on the incident.
