Rivervale Mall in Sengkang Ordered to Fix Large Cracks at the Side of the Building

Picture this: it’s a lovely, sunny morning and you’re having breakfast at Rivervale Mall.

On your way out, you notice that there appears to be a large crack on the mall’s facade, and you start panicking.

Would the mall have collapsed on me while I was having my Chicken McMuffin? I guess it wouldn’t have been the worst way to go…

Fortunately, it’s not as serious as we all believed, and it’s going to be rectified.

It all started when images of the large crack made the rounds on social media. Netizens were understandably worried about the safety of residents in the area.

Yesterday (25 Aug) the Rivervale Vista Residents’ Network highlighted the issue in a post on Facebook, asking residents who frequent the mall to be “mindful”.

“The safety of our residents is always our primary concern. We are in touch with the Mall management and they have since cordoned off the affected area while safety checks take place,” it said.

Thankfully, the issue is going to be rectified.

After sending an engineer to inspect the crack, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said it has ordered the mall’s owners to carry out rectification works.

The engineer found that the cracks in the wall had been patched up before.

The structural integrity of the mall is not affected, BCA said, but the area below the building has been cordoned off as a precautionary measure.

BCA has instructed the mall’s owners to hire a professional engineer of their own to investigate the damage.

Permanent rectification works were also recommended.

Parts of a Concrete Roof Fell Off an Industrial Building in Bedok

Just days earlier, an accident involving parts of a concrete roof falling off took place in Bedok.

Last Sunday (22 Aug), a 40m-long block of concrete fell from the top of a four-storey industrial building at 3013 Bedok Industrial Park E, after parts of decorative features on its concrete roof had broken off.

When the building’s owner, JTC Corporation, called in a professional engineer, the engineer concluded that the building’s structural integrity wasn’t affected.

The engineer will still recommend permanent rectification works, however, and inspect three other buildings in the area with similar designs.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, as few people were there at the time.

Investigations are ongoing.
