Road in S’pore Cracked Like a Movie Scene: 6 Topics S’poreans Talked About (2 Jun)

Okay, the third item on the list sounds like something out of a Hong Kong Movie.

Infernal Affairs, to be exact.

Why? Right here in Singapore, members of secret societies were found within our police force.

One of them was even the headman.

Before that, let’s look at something that seemed to be from the movies as well, but this time not a Hong Kong movie but a Hollywood one.

Cracks on Adam Road Caused Heavy Traffic Jam

Wait, what? A few measly cracks caused a jam? That’s what my colleague thought when I asked him about his thoughts on this.

Certainly not the answer I was looking for, until I realised that sometimes, a picture speaks a thousand words.

So…here you go.

Yoooo, the heck?! – my thoughtless colleague.

Yup, if I was the driver on that red taxi, I’ll get out and run because this look suspiciously like this scene in the movie. – Again, that thoughtless colleague.

But before you run screaming into the sunset and lock yourself into your storeroom, hear what the authorities have to say about this.

No, there’s no earthquake, and the end of the world isn’t happening. Yet.

According to a news report, the cracks that appeared across at least two lanes on Adam Road was caused by the built up of water pressure due to the heavy rain.

Water had seeped below the road base. When built up enough, the water pressure caused the road to “heave”, resulting in the cracks.

The cracks were discovered at 8:00 a.m. and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) immediately closed two of the four lanes for repairs.

That was after they’ve made sure that the roads are safe for use.

The lanes were reopened for use at 10:00 a.m. Pretty efficient, I’ll say.

S’pore Police To Review Screening Process After Two Gang Members Found Within Force

Image: straitstimes.com

On 31 May, a Senior Staff Sergeant (SSG) police officer, Umar Hassan, at Ang Mo Kio Police Division admitted that he belongs to a gang and is the leader of a bike gang.

He had set up his motorbike group back in 2001 with three other individuals. Six years later, he was recruited into another gang.

In Oct 2008, he approached the leader of his other gang to affiliate his motorbike group with the gang

The leader agreed and made him the head honcho of the motorbike group.

The officer has been suspended from duty since 14 Dec 2017. He was arrested after the police discovered the video of a group of men chanting gang slogans at a wedding.

Full-time Police NSF (PNSF) Muhd Firdaus Abdullah was jailed six years and two months for harbouring an alleged murderer, Muhammad Khalid Kamarudin.

They belonged to the same gang.

The Singapore Police Force spokesperson has said that the police force conducts screening processes before hiring new candidates and added that the force will review current screening processes which managed to miss out on the “adverse backgrounds” of these two men.

S’pore Ask M’sia For Formal Notification, Say Costs Incurred Every Single Day The HSR is Worked On

Image: channelnewsasia.com

On 1 June, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan told the media that his ministry has officially asked for Malaysia’s position on the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur High-Speed Rail (HSR).

He said that the project was suggested to Singapore by Malaysia back in 2013. Singapore is incurring costs every day the project continues.

If the project is cancelled, Singapore could exercise the rights for compensation.

The HSR was supposed to start construction at the end of this year and be ready for operations by 2026.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng says that the prime minister is thinking of how to cancel the project with Singapore. He raised the possibility of revisiting the project in the future.

Rusty Brown Water A ‘Common Occurrence’ in Singapore: PUB

What would you do if you came across a situation like this? You turn on your tap.

And you get rusty water.

That was what happened to Facebook user Ukyo Tachibana, who took to the social media platform to talk about her experience.

She claimed that she had contacted the Public Utilities Board (PUB), who promised to send people to her home to check. One hour before the PUB personnel arrive, they called her to tell her that the case has been handed over to the Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC).

And that AMKTC will send people down to her house.

They didn’t even contact her, and she claimed that she had to wait two days before the problem could be fixed.

PUB: It’s a Common Occurrence.

PUB has since issued a statement to queries regarding the incident.

They said that they’ve conducted a valve operation that afternoon, which caused a “resuspension of mineral sediments in the pipeline”.

As a result, some of their customers might’ve experienced a temporary discolouration of water from their taps.

Customers who experienced discoloured water are advised to run water from their tap until it becomes clear.

So if you meet something like this next time, you know what to do already, right?

S’porean Mother Ashamed Of Grab Driver Son, Asks If PDVL Decal Can Be Removed For Hari Raya

Your parents might not like what you’re doing with your life right now. Like how my ma absolutely hates the fact that I’m writing for a living instead of working at the bank.

She doesn’t care that no banks will want me too.

I’m pretty sure most of you have an experience like this too.

But so ashamed a mother will encourage a son to break the law? And tell the whole world about it?

Now, that’s a first.

On 1 Jun, it was reported that a mother was so ashamed of her son’s job she took to the Internet (of ALL PLACES?!) to ask for opinions.

Her son was recently retrenched and started working as a Grab driver.

Let’s just say that compared to her siblings, his job made her look damn lugi.

She asked the internet if it’s possible to remove the PDVL decal for Hari Raya because she heard that the Traffic Police isn’t working on that day.

And the netizens, as expected, aren’t too happy.

By the way, in case any of you have this bright idea also, removing your decal is not allowed.

It’s tamper-proof, for one, so once you take the decal out, it’s GGWP.

And two, the driver can be given a $500 fine and 21 demerit points under the Vocational License Point System.

And three: netizens would be triggered.

S’pore Ranked Top in Best Country To Grow Up In

Image: straitstimes.com

Singapore can add another “number one” to its list of achievements: The number one country for children to grow up in.

According to an End of Childhood report published by non-governmental organisation Save The Children, Singapore is tied in first place with Slovenia out of 175 countries.

Singapore scored 987 out of a possible 1,000, which means that “relatively few children” miss their childhood here.

“Singapore is a great place for children to grow up with good access to high quality education and medical care services, while also being one of the safest countries in the world. Threats to childhood that plague other countries – like early marriage, poor access to education and war – simply don’t exist in Singapore, or at extremely low levels.”

According to Save The Children’s Asia regional director Hassan Noor Saadi, “Children in Singapore enjoy some of the healthiest childhoods possible.”

Do you agree?
