78-Year-Old Woman Robbed of Five Phones While Playing Pokémon GO in the Wee Hours at Toa Payoh Rise

A 78-year-old woman who went out in the wee hours, presumably to play Pokémon GO, was robbed of five mobile phones and thousands of dollars worth of belongings while walking alone on an empty street.

The robbery occurred at 1:20 AM on Thursday (24 Apr 2025) at Toa Payoh Rise.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the elderly woman was carrying five mobile phones when she left home, likely heading to the location to “catch Pokémon.”

When a reporter visited Toa Payoh Rise, a food delivery person mentioned noticing that this spot typically attracts many people playing Pokémon GO on their phones.

Police stated in a press release that the woman’s sling bag containing five mobile phones worth about $3,000, a portable WiFi router, an EZ-Link card, and other miscellaneous items was stolen by a man who approached her suddenly from behind.

Suspect Arrested Same Day

After further investigation and reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding buildings, officers from the Tanglin Police Division identified the man and arrested him on the same day.

The 30-year-old suspect, Muhaimin Bin Hairul Azzat, was charged in court on Saturday (26 Apr 2025).

Court documents revealed that the stolen bag was worth $10 and contained a wallet, an iPhone 15, four Samsung Galaxy phones, bank cards, a Pokémon GO Plus device, and other items.

The total value of the stolen goods amounted to approximately $3,000.

Under Section 356 of the Penal Code, those convicted of robbery face imprisonment of one to seven years, plus caning.

The police stressed that they have zero tolerance for such brazen criminal acts and will spare no effort in apprehending criminals and bringing them to justice.
