Lest you’re unaware, 3 July was a historic day for Singapore.

Or Tampines, to be specific.

“Why? Did something happen to Tampines?” you wonder.

Well, as you might’ve surmised from the headline, a global star stepped onto the field pavement at our very own Tampines Hub yesterday…

Clad not in shoes befitting his status but slippers.

Cristiano Ronaldo, in our country, wearing slippers?

Just how historic is this notion?

Ronaldo Wore Slippers as He Visited Our Tampines Hub Yesterday

According to The New Paper, Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo, who turned up in Singapore on Tuesday (2 July), was at Our Tampines Hub for over two hours yesterday to attend a closed-door commercial event. And it seems that the mega star’s not above such casual wear as slippers, having been decked out in a pair of slippers.

If you’re wondering why Cristiano, of all people, would have to resort to such ‘degrading’ streetwear, here’s the thing:

I don’t know either.

Considering how the player’s a hugely successful footballer with a whole underwear line to his name, one can only surmise that the star’s slightly lacking in the financial department.

Or perhaps those slippers are just top-notch ones that cost a thousand bucks. Wouldn’t be surprised.

Fans gather to take a look

According to AsiaOne, over 500 fans gathered at OTH yesterday afternoon in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the Portuguese football star.

Around 300 huddled around several entrances of Arena@OTH and on the second and third levels of the stadium, while 200 chose to camp at the South Arrival Plaza.

Only one group, however, managed to spot the Juventus forward. And if you were there…

I’m really hoping that you were waiting at South Arrival Plaza.

According to reports, Cristiano waved towards fans waiting at the Plaza, and reportedly gave a thumbs-up as he left in a chauffeured car. Naturally, the lucky fans were beside themselves with glee.

“I was having a bad day in school, but this is one of the best days of my life,” said Hai Sing Catholic School student Nigel Khoo, 15, who was reportedly still in shock 20 minutes after spotting his idol in the flesh.

“I will never forget today.”

Similarly, Harini Jagatheeswaran, a St Hilda’s Secondary School student, was content despite catching just a glimpse of the ex-Real Madrid star.

“He’s a legend and I can’t believe he came to my town, Tampines. I would think he’d be at Marina Bay or Orchard, but he was here,” said the 17-year-old excitedly.

“I can’t believe it.

“I caught a picture of him waving and I am going to brag about this for the rest of my life.”

As for the fans waiting a little closer to Festive Plaza, the wait proved to be a futile one. Despite waiting for as long as three hours, some fans were unable to spot the star as he left in the 2018/19 Juventus away kit (slippers included. Jking. Actually I’ve no idea.)

But hey, don’t lose hope just yet

Apparently, the star’s expected to make an appearance in at least one school today so students please rejoice.

(Damn it I’m so salty)

Also, Ronaldo’s expected to be in town again later this month, as Juventus take on Tottenham Hotspur in the International Champions Cup on 21 July.

No idea who will win, but if Ronaldo pulls on those delightful slippers in place of his usual tight-fit football boots…

He’s gonna score a hat trick. I’m calling it.
