SFA Recalling Now Foods Royal Jelly Capsules As They Contained Banned Drugs

When we hear of the Singapore Food Agency banning a food product, we’re alarmed but not exactly surprised.

After all, with so many food products being imported into the country, some of them are bound to have harmful substances.

That’s why we’re careful about the food we purchase, taking care to avoid those brands previously blacklisted.

However, we have very few concerns when ordering health supplements online, because no sane manufacturer would ever include harmful ingredients or banned drugs in it, right?

Right?

SFA Recalling Now Foods Royal Jelly Capsules As They Contained Banned Drugs

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has detected a banned drug in Now Foods Royal Jelly Capsules, during its inspection and testing of the product.

Metronidazole, a globally banned antibiotic in food-producing animals, was found in the Royal Jelly Capsules, SFA said in a Facebook post.

According to Healthline, metronidazole can have serious side effects if used in high doses for a long period of time. These include meningitis, Peripheral neuropathy, seizures, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

This is why SFA advised customers who purchased the product not to consume it.

“Those who have consumed the implicated product and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice,” SFA said.

The SFA has also directed the imported, Bloom Concept Pte Ltd, to recall the affected batches, as metronidazole is not allowed in food products under local food regulations.

The recall is ongoing.

What’s Royal Jelly?

For those who don’t know, royal jelly is not a jam once eaten by kings and queens, but a substance produced by honey bees to feed the queen bees and their young.

It’s often sold as a health supplement to treat various physical ailments and chronic diseases, as proponents claim it strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, and provides antioxidants, among other things.

However, none of these benefits has been scientifically proven, and its use remains controversial.

SFA Recalled Eat Real Quinoa Puff Products Due to Undeclared Milk Allergens

Last month, another food product seen as a healthy alternative was recalled after an undeclared substance was found in it.

On 12 June, the SFA announced that it was recalling several Eat Real Quinoa Puff due to undeclared milk allergens.
