Race Event Attracts Over 20,000 Participants Across Different Categories

The event flagged off from around 4.15am at the F1 Pit Building and reportedly drew more than 20,000 participants.

Competitors took part in three distance categories: 5km, 10km, and 21.1km.

In a separate Instagram post after the race concluded, the organisers apologised for areas where they “fell short,” including a course distance that “did not meet expectations” and congestion in certain sections of the route.

Previous Fatalities at Running Events in Singapore

This is not the first death to occur during the 2XU Compression Run. In 2014, 45-year-old Martynn Koh Tong Yong collapsed during the event and later died in hospital.

More recently, a participant at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in December 2024 died after finishing the race. That runner received medical attention on-site before being transported to Singapore General Hospital, where they passed away.

The December incident marked the third death since the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon was first held in 2002.

In 2011, a 22-year-old man died from acute coronary insufficiency after completing a half marathon. It was later found that he had suffered from a previously undetected abnormal coronary artery.
