Here’s a million-dollar question: what’s the capital of Singapore?
Take a moment to guess.
If you’ve said Yishun, power to you: we concur though that’s completely wrong.
Chances are, some of you won’t even know the answer, and might not even know what “capital” means.
Here’s a bit of a context before we move on.
What’s a Capital of a Country?
Lest you’ve returned whatever you’ve learned in geography classes back to your teacher, here’s a brief idea of what capital of a country is.
In Wikipedia, it’s stated as a “the municipality exercising primary status in a country, state, province, or other administrative region, usually as its seat of government.”
To quote an example, Malaysia’s capital is Kuala Lumpur. But why not, say, JB or Melaka?
That’s because that’s where the Government is located.
But how about Singapore?
Singapore is small; so small, the entire country is a city, unlike Malaysia whereby there are many cities.
In other words, Singapore’s capital is, well, Singapore. You can’t say that Singapore’s capital is in Orchard because The Istana is located there, simply because Orchard isn’t a city, but merely a place.
So, now to Running Man, the show that some of us have stopped watching but might just watch again with this new episode.
Running Man Since Its “Cancellation”
Long-time Running Man fans would remember the saga whereby the show was announced to be cancelled by February 2017. Fans all over the world cried, but it took a U-turn as Kim Jong Kook turned the table and convinced every member to stay on.
But there were major changes: Gary had left and two new members, Jeon So-min (every guy’s new girlfriend now) and Yang Se-chan joined the team.
If you’ve not been watching, the two new members did blend into the team very well. And if I’ve not said it yet, I’ll say it again: Jeon So-min is every guy’s new bae.
Here, one more picture for you.
And she’s surprisingly already 32 years old.
Episode 425
In episode 425, which was filmed on 16 October 2018 and aired on 11 November 2018, Singapore was mentioned.
Most of the Running Man cast have been to Singapore, but I guess all they did was to eat and drink instead of, you know, learning some history.
In a game, Haha and Yang Se-chan were put to the test: they were to name the capital of Singapore.
Smartie Yoo Jae-Suk posted this question:
“What’s the capital of Singapore?”
Here we’ll do the transcript of what they said:
Yang Se-chan: Wait. Singapore? I know this! This is crazy!
Background: This is difficult
Yang Se-chan: I know this!
Background: Se-chan knows the answer
Yang Se-chan: This is crazy!
Yoo Jae-Suk: What’s the capital of Singapore? You have five seconds
Haha: This is frustrating! I know the answer!
Yang Se-chan: If this is correct, I’m a genius
Yoo Jae-Suk: The capital city of Singapore is quite easy…what’s the capital city?
Haha: This is wrong
Yoo Jae-Suk: Let’s look at the answers. In one, two, three!
Haha: One of us can eat
Background (many voices but one of them is clearly Kim Jong Kook): Kuala Lumpur is in Malaysia! That’s Malaysia!
Yang Se-chan: That’s in Malaysia. Here’s mine
Yang Se-chan: Changi?
Haha: Do you mean Song Chang Eui?
Kim Jong Kook: You mean Nam Chang Eui? What’s that?
Haha: Who?
Yang Se-chan: Changi
Yoo Jae-Suk: Is that the capital city?
Ji Suk-jin: He’s talking about the international airport
Yoo Jae-Suk: That’s Changi International Airport
Yang Se-chan: Isn’t that the capital city?
Yoo Jae-Suk: That’s the name of the airport
Ji Suk-jin: We have Incheon Airport. Is that our capital city?
Haha: We have Gimpo Airport. Is Gimpo our capital city?
Lee Kwang-Soo: What’s the capital of Singapore?
Yoo Jea-Suk: The capital city is Singapore, right? (nodding to the production team)
Haha: Really?
Yoo Jae-Suk: The capital city of Singapore is Singapore
Kim Jong Kook: That’s why he asked this question
Yoo Jae-Suk: The city is a country
Kim Jong Kook: That’s an interesting question
