Typically, when you see the title “safe distancing ambassador” and the word “assault”, you’d assume that the safe distancing ambassador is the victim.

But as the saying goes: when you assume, you make a fool out of potpourri.

Reader: I don’t think that’s the saying-

Former Safe-Distancing Ambassador Targetted Pet Shop Manager

The former safe distancing ambassador in our story is Aloysius Hoe Wei Peng, a 40-year-old Singaporean.

On 16 Dec last year, Hoe was out with his female colleague doing their job when they came across Little Pets Kingdom, a pet shop located at Yishun Central 1.

He noticed that the manager inside the pet shop was not wearing a mask, and instructed his colleague to take a picture of the shop.

He Jun, the manager of the shop, saw this and was not pleased. At the time, both Hoe and his colleague were not wearing the lanyards that displayed their job titles.

He Jun was upset and asked the female colleague why she had taken a photo. Hoe then asked him: “What’s wrong?”

This escalated into a full-blown argument and Hoe kicked He Jun at one point, who then grabbed a stone lion statue from a nearby table and threw it at Hoe.

The two continued grabbing, punching, and kicking each other for some time, until another man who worked at a shop next door intervened and separated them.

Hoe called the police to report the incident, saying: “I am an SDA (safe distancing ambassador). I was doing my job. However, he beat me up. I do not need ambulance.”

Hoe later visited Khoo Teck Puat Hospital as he sustained some bruises and abrasions. He Jun suffered a swollen right hand, but did not seek medical attention.

Also Assaulted GrabFood Rider

Several months earlier, Hoe and his ex-girlfriend assaulted a GrabFood rider. He was not working as a safe distancing ambassador at the time.

On 3 Feb last year, the pair were walking along a link bridge at Waterway Point when Daniel Seah, a food delivery rider, overtook them by cutting between them.

Hoe’s then-girlfriend, Wan Farrah Shireen Abu Hassan, allegedly shouted at the man: “Do (you) not know how to say ‘Excuse me’?”.

The rider got off his bike and asked Wan if she had premenstrual syndrome.

The pair started abusing the rider with vulgarities and assaulted him as well; Hoe kicked the rider in the stomach and stepped on his spectacles when they fell to the ground.

A security guard intervened, but the assault continued, causing Seah’s nose to bleed. Fortunately for him, the attack was captured on CCTV cameras.

Jailed Three Weeks

Yesterday (31 Aug), Hoe was sentenced to three weeks’ imprisonment and fined S$800 for his offences.

The 40-year-old pleaded guilty to one charge each of committing affray, voluntarily causing hurt with common intention, and mischief.

He had been jailed in the past for rioting and had committed drug-related offences as well.
