Singapore has unveiled SAFTI City, a cutting-edge urban training facility designed for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Launched by Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, this advanced facility aims to enhance soldiers’ skills in urban operations, including homeland security, counter-terrorism, and disaster relief.
SAFTI City is built to resemble a densely populated urban area, featuring over 70 buildings, including three 12-storey structures, and an integrated transport hub with an MRT station and bus interchange. The facility includes decommissioned MRT trains, which are used to simulate high-risk scenarios such as hostage rescues.
Key Features of SAFTI City
The facility is equipped with approximately 11,000 sensors to track soldiers’ movements and provide real-time feedback during training exercises. It also includes smart targets that can simulate enemy responses, enhancing the realism of combat scenarios. Battlefield effects like blasts and smoke are used to mimic real-world conditions, challenging soldiers to operate effectively under pressure.

Training Capacity and Future Plans
SAFTI City can accommodate up to two battalions, or about 1,200 soldiers, at any given time, with plans to train around 20,000 soldiers annually. Phase 2 of the facility will introduce additional features such as an industrial complex and a ferry terminal, further expanding its training capabilities.
