When you come out to the workforce, you’ll realise that the type of boss that you have is super important.

If you happen to have a good boss who gives you plenty of opportunities to shine, then you’re looking at a pretty rosy future. Maybe.

But if you’re unlucky enough to meet a bad boss? Every Monday to Friday will seem like an eternity.

While there are rules to ensure that bosses in Singapore don’t step out of line, there would always be some who chose to ignore them.

Lest you want to know your rights, here’s a video we’ve done on a list of things that bosses in Singapore can’t do to you:

But even among bad bosses, there are some who deserves to be locked up and put away for the safety of society.

Like these bosses

So here’s what happened.

On 5 Nov, it was reported on South China Morning Post (SCMP) that three managers of a home improvement firm in Southern China made their employees drink pee

And whipped them with leather belts.

All because they failed to meet the sales quota.

The staff were also allegedly threatened with the following punishments if the sales goal isn’t met at the end of the month:

  • The team leader has to eat three cockroaches for every failed sale
  • Drink vinegar or toilet water
  • Sell condoms and sanitary pads on the street
  • Have their head shaved

And that’s not the worst part:

Now, you’re wondering what could be worse than the punishments.

The staff are going through all these without getting a single cent back.

Netizens have been wondering why the employees don’t just quit their jobs. I mean, anyone would, right?

According to a staff of the company, they’ve allegedly not been paid for two months. The company had also allegedly threatened to reduce their severance pay if they quit.

That’s like all stick and no carrot.

Well, the police were alerted to this company and have arrested the three managers for the treatment of their staff.

Two of the managers were jailed for 10 days while the third manager will be jailed for five days, according to the police.

Ill-treatment of workers getting prevalent in China

Sad to say, this isn’t the first time something like this happened in China.

Previously, six male staff in a company in Yichang, Hubei, were caught on film getting slapped by a female employee repeatedly.

Some staff were also made to crawl on their hands and knees in a circle while chanting.

When the video went viral online, the head of the company defended the practice, saying that the men had requested for the punishment themselves after failing to perform at the company.

It’s said that with the economic growth slowing down in China, more of such incidents are taking place in the country.

Even in Singapore, while we are (mostly) protected by the Employment Act, every individual have to know their own rights to not get taken advantage of by their own employers.
