We’ve all had our fair shares of strange online purchases.
This time, a man ordered a Samsung phone from a Lazada seller and received something else. It wasn’t an off-brand phone, a plastic phone or even anything remotely electronic.
He received a bubble tea straw.
A Bubble Tea Straw in exchange for a Samsung Phone
The man, 55, had ordered the Samsung phone for $447 on Lazada.
He had bought the phone for his wife, who had wanted a new device after her mobile phone package had expired.
Sweet intentions, but the result is not as sweet.
The man had already had his eye on the Samsung phone for quite some time, so when the 10.10 Lazada sales came about, it was his time to strike.
The three-star rated Samsung phone was priced at $447 after the 10.10 discounts, which was apparently $180 cheaper than in-store prices.
Ah, it’s always for the prices.
A few days on, he received the phone and realised that not only was the packaging too small, it was too flat to be a phone as well.
Opening the package immediately, his moment of realisation came. He had received a single bubble tea straw instead.
Well, at least it’s an expensive one – would probably be of good quality right?

Subsequently, he requested the deliveryman to take a picture of the straw as evidence, while he himself also contacted Lazada for recourse afterwards.
The man noted that in the past, the worst that has ever happened was when there was a colour difference in the products ordered. This was the first time he had received such a drastically different product.
A “new” seller?
The seller who the man had purchased the Samsung phone from was likely to be a new seller, since there were no reviews left on his account.
Although the man had previously suspected that the seller was unreliable, he went ahead with the purchase anyway as the seller said that it was a reliable mobile device retailer.
The seller had also added information on its account about its purported “store”.
As a result, the man was convinced that the seller was organising a clearance sale, and had took to Lazada to conduct their sales.
While Lazada’s customer service said that this matter would be dealt with accordingly, and requested for the man to send his package to them, the man has yet to receive an update from Lazada thus far.
Thereafter, the man decided to make a police report. The matter is currently under investigation.
The Physical Store’s Response
On Thursday (20 Oct), the physical store listed in the scammer’s Lazada account made a post in relation to this. It was noted that a user on a large online shopping platform had been making use of the store’s good name to scam others.
Customers were urged to stay alert in order not to fall for the scam.
The physical store expressed that this was not the first time this has happened, although it does not even sell its products on Lazada.
The scammer has since stopped selling products on Lazada as well.
At least 5 other complaints
Eventually, the man found out that five new reviews had sprang up on the seller’s account – and all of them were negative reviews.
The reviews had the same complaints that he had, and all users were in similar predicaments.
It is speculated that after the seller had received payment from these parties, he delivered the smartphone products all in the same batch to avoid receiving negative reviews on his account earlier.
The man also added that after this experience, he will only be purchasing phones from physical smartphone stores.
Lesson learnt, i guess.
