Considering the speeds at which we travel on the roads, it’s a mystery why some motorists don’t take road safety more seriously.
All it takes is a single second of negligence to inadvertently injure other motorists or pedestrians on the road.
Sometimes, this can lead to death, and sadly this is what happened this morning (25 Aug).
46-YO Woman Died After Accident in AMK
A 46-year-old woman lost her life this morning after being involved in an accident with an SBS Transit bus.
The police said they were alerted to the accident at 6.47am.
The woman was reportedly knocked down by the SBS Transit bus in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 and was trapped under the rear wheel of the bus.
Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force managed to free the woman using hydraulic rescue equipment, but it was too late.
The woman was later pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.
SBS Bus Driver Arrested for Careless Driving
The driver behind the wheel of the bus – a 56-year-old – has been arrested for careless driving causing death.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Ms Tammy Tan, SBS Transit senior vice-president for corporate communications, said: “We are deeply sorry that this has happened and are trying to get in touch with the next-of-kin to offer our condolences and assistance.”
She added that they will support the family during this difficult time and assist with police investigations as well.
Investigations are still ongoing.
31YO Cyclist Died in Similar Accident in March
Earlier this year, in March, another fatal accident involving an SBS Transit bus took place.
A 31-year-old cyclist who ended up being trapped under the bus died from his injuries.
The accident occurred on the night of 19 March at the junction of Loyang Avenue and Pasir Ris Drive 1.
Ms Tammy Tan said the bus was going straight and was about to make a right turn at the traffic junction when the accident occurred.
She said the traffic light was green in the bus driver’s favour.
The cyclist was reportedly dragged for about 30m under the bus before he died. The 63-year-old bus driver was also arrested for careless driving causing death.
In another accident last Dec, a 54-year-old woman was knocked down by a bus and trapped under its rear right wheel.
The bus was making a right turn when the mishap happened; the woman was halfway through the crossing when the bus hit her.
Fortunately, the woman seems to have survived the accident.
