Scammer is So Real, He Even Dubbed a Fake Voice Over a Romeo Tan Video

Let’s get this out of the way really quick: getting scammed sucks.

And if you’re a scammer…well all I can say is this.

Sadly, the advancement of technology also means the advancement of ways to get cheated online.

With some even going so far as to disguise themselves as celebrities.

Not-Really Romeo Tan

Imagine someone impersonating as a famous idol or actor

Then, said idol convinces you to give up a huge sum of money and you almost agree.

Because according to Asiaone, this literally happened to one Thai woman.

A Lianhe Wanbao interview on 23 August revealed that a scammer had taken one of actor Romeo Tan’s video clip and recorded his voice over it.

The clip was then sent over to the Thai woman.

Fortunately, she had no idea who Romeo was but continued to speak with the fake over a course of seven months.

Eventually, the woman got suspicious when the impersonator asked her for around S$1,369.

Her gut was proven right after she did a bit of checking and found that it was indeed a scammer.

She supposedly even berated them for impersonation and souring Romeo’s reputation.

Sometimes you have to fight fire with an extinguisher. 

The Real Romeo Speaks

Even for the local actor himself, this incident was a shock.

He claims that normally, he receives enough messages from fake accounts that he just brushes it off.

“But what scared me this time was that there was a video, and it was cropped so that the mouth couldn’t be seen during the dubbing.”

The woman not being a fan and not recognising his voice might’ve made communicating with her easier too.

The original video was supposedly recorded by Romeo when he was filming in Taiwan before uploading it to social media.

He has since gotten in contact with the Thai woman regarding the incident.

“The female netizen told me that the conman knew many things about my life. I think he has been observing me online for a while, and he’s able to find out things about me and use my details to cheat others. It’s scary and it’s hard to stop these things from happening,”

He also warns people off any messages from ‘celebrities’ asking them for money, stating that public figures won’t do such things.

Generally, we should all do a double-take if we get an unknown message regarding transferring of cash.
