SCDF To Conduct More Fire-Safety Checks As Malls Crowded During The Festive Year-End

Have you ever been to a mall that caught fire? It’s a really interesting experience, but one I hope to never go through again.

I was at a mall somewhere in the East side many years ago when it caught fire. I remember clearly that no one panicked, not even me and I was a small kid.

It was probably due to all those fire drills we always had in school and at work. That said, it was a pretty serious incident because I remember thick plumes of smoke wafting through the air.

Everyone was told to get down and literally crawl on the floor, and I remember how I refused to let go of my Toys ‘R’ Us bag. Priorities, amirite?

All that aside, it’s clear how important these fire safety checks and fire drills are, just-in-case. *touch wood*

SCDF To Conduct More Fire-Safety Checks As Malls Crowded During The Festive Year-End

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has been increasing the number of inspections at malls, discotheques and pubs in light of the fast-approaching year-end festivities.

SCDF said in a statement that it’s increasingly important for places such as shopping malls and hotels to have fire safety checks in place come year-end.

This is because these places will likely see a larger crowd at the end of the year as people rush about Christmas gift shopping or celebrating with their friends and family.

Enforcement Operation Conducted

SCDF conducted an enforcement operation which took place on Friday at two shopping malls and nine public entertainment outlets.

Unfortunately, a few lapses were found such as obstruction to escape routes which could be detrimental in the unlikely event of a fire.

They said, “SCDF takes fire-safety violations seriously and will not hesitate to take tough enforcement action against offenders.”

But it’s not just shopping malls that should have fire-safety precautions in place. With the year-end coming up, more families are putting up Christmas trees with lights.

SCDF reminds households to switch off decorative Christmas lights before leaving their houses and before going to sleep.

Let’s all hope for a safe, fire-free Christmas.
