A pair of schoolgirls were this close to possibly losing their lives last week (10 Oct).
Recorded in a dashcam by Facebook user Fabian Chan, they foolishly dashed across the road in spite of the red light (for them).
I’m not sure which school this is, maybe someone familiar with it can help us out.

Fabian himself was driving along this school zone and as stated himself, there were tons of “illegally parked cars” by the road, most of which were probably parents waiting for their children.
In case you were wondering why it should be illegal to park there, you’re about to find out.
Illegal Crossing
Imagine you’re the driver, and this is what you see.
You’ve got the green light. No cars or people in front. The coast is clear.
All is good, right?
A wild schoolgirl appears.
Yes, this is pretty similar to the boy who was knocked down along Depot Road earlier this month.
The illegally parked cars (especially this close to the pedestrian crossing) had completely obstructed the view of the driver.

While it definitely is the fault of the schoolgirls for dashing across the road during a red light for them, you could say that the drivers who illegally parked their cars are just as at fault too.
Thanks to Fabian’s lightning-quick reflexes, he managed to brake in time to save their lives.
While they most likely were rushing for the bus which had already arrived across the road and they didn’t want to wait for the next bus (let’s face it – we’ve all been there and did exactly what they did next), they had failed to even check for any oncoming cars (this I can say I’ve never done).
Both schoolgirls were caught off guard and shocked by the car that almost took their lives, momentarily stopping in their tracks.
The girl further in front decided to finish crossing the road, while the other girl backed off and allowed Fabian to continue passing.

The schoolgirls probably saw their lives flash across their eyes and has started reflecting on their outlook on life.
If you want to watch the video for yourself, you can do so here.
This happened in Bishan less than an hour ago. Girls tried to dash for the bus without looking out for traffic, didn't help that my view was obstructed by all the illegally parked cars.

Road Safety
When I was a child, I heard this Chinese quote – 宁可迟到几分钟,不要急着把命送 – which my mother repeated to me often.
Translation: You’d rather be late for a few minutes than to lose your life. But it rhymes in Chinese and sounds better and more poetic.

But you understand the gist of it.
Don’t throw your life away so easily after your parents spent so much time and effort in raising you.
Also, in case you were wondering where I heard that quote:
Old but gold music video by Marcus Chin (陳建彬) on road safety (but it’s more for drivers) made as a parody of classic Hokkien song 欢喜就好.
They should play this video after you pass your driving test instead of that gory and scary video about traffic accidents.
Those who have obtained your license – you know what I’m talking about.
