At the hawker centre in Changi Village, there is a quaint but fairly popular store called “Million Star Fried Banana”.
The store has a long-standing history in the hawker centre, earning its famous reputation through selling its fried banana fritters; an unrivalled and tasty speciality of theirs, since it used Pisang Rajah, which is known as the King of Bananas.
With good ingredients, a great cook, and a warm store owner; its business is bound to be a success.
Unfortunately, the second-generation owner by the name of James Chan passed away on 21 February 2022.
He was only 49.
According to the Shin Min Daily News, the cause of his death was a heart attack.
Passed Away in the Early Morning by Heart Attack
Grievously enough, the person who had discovered Chan’s demise was his own mother.
On the morning of 21 February, Chan’s mother realised that he was still in bed at 11am, even though he would usually leave the house by 10:30am to open the stall.
When she tried to wake him up, she came to the chilling realisation that his hand was stiff and cold.
Chan’s mother called for an ambulance with due haste, but it was too late; when the paramedics arrived, they declared that Chan was dead at the scene.
When the Shin Min reporter inquired about her son’s health prior to his passing, Chan’s mother said that her son never mentioned having any health conditions and he exercised regularly.
As Chan’s mother eulogised her son during his funeral, she had been sobbing as she spoke.
It’s always hard for the grey-haired to send away the black-haired; especially parents having to send off their own children.
Chan was Prepared to Take Over the Stall
James Chan had started helping out at the “Million Star Fried Banana” three years ago as he was planning to take over the business from his elderly parents eventually.
The couple were naturally elated about the fact that Chan was willing to take up their mantle.
However, with their child and successor’s passing, Chan’s father will continue the business for now.
Many loyal customers of the store have good impressions of Chan for his friendly service.
He will be dearly missed.

Besides his willingness to take over the stall, Chan also proved that he had the mettle and mind for the business.
Even despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which heavily affected most business in the Food & Beverage Industry, Chan managed to improve the stall’s business through some tech-savviness by expanding the stall’s exposure and outreach through Facebook.
Melvin Chew, the administrator of the Facebook group called Hawkers United – Dabao (Takeaway) 2020, remembered Chan sharing avidly in the group.
The Facebook group had been created in 2020 to gather support for hawker centres in the face of declining business due to the circuit breaker that started in April.
Thanks to Chan, the stall’s business never faltered and improved instead.
Alas, death is a cruel and impartial thing; it takes everything eventually.
Chan’s mother told the Shin Min reporter that if there were any interested parties who were willing to take over their business, they could contact them.
