Why bother to buy a BTO flat when you can make one yourself?
A man in his 60s has reportedly set up a makeshift living space next to an electrical equipment room (switch room) in an HDB car park, complete with a cardboard bed, pillow, curtains, and a calendar, drawing attention from nearby residents.
Makeshift Living Space Discovered
Shin Min Daily News received a tip from a reader about a man in his 60s who has been staying near the electrical room at the car park of Block 508, Wellington Circle in Sembawang.
The reader noted that besides a cardboard bed, the man had set up a pillow, curtains, and a calendar, creating what looks like a “mini room.”
When reporters visited the location on Friday (14 Mar 2025), they found the “mini room” near the electrical room on the first floor of the car park, but the elderly man was nowhere to be seen.
The space has walls on three sides, providing shelter from wind and rain while offering some privacy. Reporters also noticed what appeared to be two personal photographs attached to the wall.
Personal Living Arrangements
The “mini room” contains thick cardboard sheets laid out with a pillow. Chinese New Year decorations are stuck to the wall alongside a hanging calendar. Various daily necessities are placed around the area, including water containers, a roll of tissue paper, cups, and bowls.
The elderly man has also installed a bamboo pole above the space, from which he hung fabric with clips to create a curtain.
Residents living in nearby flats revealed that the man appeared more than a year ago. He is typically absent in the mornings and only returns around 6-7 pm in the evenings, suggesting he may have employment.
A male resident who wished to remain anonymous said the elderly man mostly keeps to himself, occasionally walking around the area shirtless but rarely interacting with others.
Residents don’t know why he has chosen to stay there. “He doesn’t disturb anyone, but we’re all curious about what happened to him and why he’s homeless,” the resident said.
Another male resident mentioned hearing rumors from neighbors that the elderly man was previously married but is now divorced. “I heard he became homeless after his divorce, but I’ve never asked him directly, so I don’t know if it’s true,” he said.
