Mascots are the face of brands and places.

And Sembawang GRC (yes, that Sembawang GRC) has a pineapple.
Meet Sembawangโs Mascot
This image surfaced on Reddit Singapore recently.

Wait, itโs not CNY. So why is there a pineapple?
Could it be that Sembawang just believes that this is the year of the Pineapple? Or that a pineapple will usher in good fortunes because #HuatAh?
Nope, what youโre looking at is Sembawang GRCโs official mascot called Semba Wang.
And He Has Existed For Years
Back in 2014, Straits Times suddenly ran a video on this dashing pineapple mascot. He was greeting kids with a joyful smile and trendy green hair.
Awww, isnโt he cute?

And according to the report, the pineapple mascot, Mr Semba Wang, was thought of since 2012 during the Singapore National Games opening ceremony.
A team of Sembawang grassroots leaders and Peopleโs Association staff had wanted to create a common identity for Sembawang GRC.
So Why A Pineapple?
No, itโs not because the people behind the mascot are particularly superstitious.
Instead, it was to pay tribute to the history of Sembawang, whose villagers worked in pineapple and rubber plantations in the early 1900s.
In addition, famous Teochew pioneer and philanthropist Lim Nee Soon was known as the โrubber and pineapple kingโ, and his plantations were located at Yishun and Sembawang.

And Theyโre Not The Only Ones
Marine Parade has a pseudo mascot that never quite made it off the paper. But heโs definitely cute AF.
He talks about how great it is to live in Marine Parade but feels that people could be a bit kinder with each other.
And remind people to download the SGSecure app or you might just kena extra.
A Cool Idea
Iโll be honest, Sembawang just rose up in terms of โcoolnessโ. I mean, which other zones have an official mascot that walks and breathes like their residents?
Every zone should have a mascot.

After all, imagine a competition between Sembawang FC and Marine Parade FC in the Singapore Premier League.
During half time, you can have a pineapple and a dolphin come out and challenge each other one-on-one in a free-for-all shootout.
Wouldnโt that be amazing?
