Residents in Sembawang have raised concerns about the misuse of telecom equipment rooms in at least three HDB blocks.
These “rooms” have reportedly been turned into makeshift storage spaces, filled with various household items and junk.
Here’s what happened.
Someone in Sembawang Use The HDB Telecom Equipment Rooms Like His Personal Storeroom
A resident alerted Shin Min Daily News about the situation in several HDB blocks in Sembawang. The telecom equipment rooms in these buildings have been crammed with all sorts of items, essentially becoming private storage areas.
The issue isn’t limited to a single block. It appears that several nearby blocks are facing similar problems. Residents worry that this could pose a significant fire hazard, potentially affecting many in the neighborhood.
Photos reveal one of the telecom equipment rooms packed with items such as sofas, cabinets, refrigerators, and even a large suitcase.
A visit by Shin Min Daily News reporters confirmed the misuse in at least three HDB blocks, with electrical risers also being affected.
In two blocks, the telecom equipment rooms were found to contain multiple refrigerators, sofas, tables, chairs, and cardboard boxes.
Residents expressed surprise when informed about the misuse of these rooms. Many believe this creates potential safety risks.
A 56-year-old driver and resident, pointed out that the accumulation of items in these rooms could lead to uncontrollable fires if ignited. “Mattresses and sofas are highly flammable, especially in that location,” he stated.
Other residents shared similar views, highlighting the fire risk and potential disruption to communication systems. They hope authorities will increase inspections to prevent accidents.
Now, I don’t know about you, but once I’ve written this, I now have the urge to check out the telecom equipment room in my block.
I might find some gold leh.
What Are Telecom Equipment Rooms?
Telecommunication Equipment Rooms are essential facilities in HDB flats and other residential buildings in Singapore.
These rooms are specifically designed to house telecommunication equipment and systems that enable the provision of various telecommunication services to residents.
TERs are typically separate from the Main Distribution Frame rooms and are part of the building’s infrastructure dedicated to supporting telecommunications.
They serve as a central point for the installation, maintenance, and operation of telecommunication equipment by licensed service providers. The rooms are equipped with necessary features such as adequate space, ventilation, and electrical outlets to ensure the proper functioning of the equipment housed within.
They are not to be used for any other purpose, such as storage.
