In 2000, McDonald’s launched a Hello Kitty collection in Singapore, which featured wedding designs with the purchase of Extra Value Meals.
This is the moment we discovered that Singaporeans are secretly insane.
In what looked like a zombie apocalypse from afar, thousands of people turned up to buy the toys with the Extra Value Meals, with crowds forming as early as sunrise, and in some instances, the night before.
It was so popular that even McDonald’s was surprised by the overwhelming response.
We later found out that this wasn’t just a coping mechanism to deal with the Y2K bug.
In the last three years, McDonald’s has released a Hello Kitty and My Melody carrier, sending Singaporeans into a frenzy all over again.
Well, if you still can’t get enough of these Sanrio characters, you’re about to be a very happy camper.
Sentosa is Going to Have Hello Kitty & My Melody from 12 December 2020
Siloso Beach will be lit up this Christmas by seven larger-than-life light installations that include some of your favourite Sanrio characters!
From 12 Dec to 3 Jan, residents can head down to Sentosa to hang out with Hello Kitty and My Melody at Island Lights with Sanrio characters.
The fourth edition of Sentosa’s signature light-up event will also feature past landmarks like the old Fantasy Island waterpark from the 90s, which will be represented by an eight-metre-tall installation.
But residents will no doubt turn up to take wefies with Hello Kitty against the backdrop of a stylistic recreation of the Sentosa Gateway arch.
You can also hang out with My Melody at a whimsical mini-maze featuring the classic Ferry Terminal, or see what Pompompurin is up to at the re-creation of the ‘Siloso’ word block.
LED neon outlines of the loveable Sanrio characters will also be displayed at a feature panel that stretches up to 12-metres in length along Siloso Beach.
Free Admission
The best thing about this light-up is that admission is absolutely free!
You are, however, required to make reservations ahead of your visit. This will help the organisers facilitate safe distancing measures.
You may register up to 5 people per visit for the following sessions every night:
• Session 1: 7.30pm to 8.30pm
• Session 2: 8.30pm to 9.30pm
• Session 3: 9.30pm to 10.30pm
Sessions are available for booking 5 days in advance, with the first session open for booking on Monday (7 Dec).
On the day of your visit, simply head down to Siloso Beach and show your email confirmation at the entrance at Sapphire Pavilion.
Then, you can finally be reunited with your Sanrio friends. They may not say much, though.
Virtual Escape Room Game
If Sanrio is not your thing, you can go on a hunt for treasure with your friends and family at Sentosa’s first-ever virtual escape room game!
Fort Siloso – The Quest for Lost Gold will have puzzles for you to solve, cryptic clues to decipher, and treasure to find.
The virtual escape room game, held in Fort Siloso, will be available from 14 December 2020 to 10 January 2021.
Tickets are priced at $20 and can be purchased here.
Players can register a team of up to six, and each game lasts an hour.
There will be two sessions per day on weekdays and 12 sessions per day every weekend and on public holidays.
You can visit Sentosa’s site for more information.
