It’s year 2050. You’re meeting your old friend, Ah Hock, for dinner.
When you’re at the restaurant, Ah Hock made a holographic call to you and said, “Eh sorry ah, my grandson is sick and I need to take care of him.”
You immediately screamed, “Wah, you SG-HK ATB again!”
Everyone has forgotten how the phrase came about, but if you’re reading this in 2050, here’s how this started.
Confirmed: SG-HK Travel Bubble Burst Again As Unlinked COVID-19 Cases Soar
The inevitable has happened: the Singapore-Hong Kong Air Travel Bubble has been burst again.
This morning, Singapore’s new Transport Minister, S. Iswaran, had a meeting with Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau, and the news is now confirmed.
The Ministry of Transport said, “Both sides remain strongly committed to launching the ATB safely. However, in the light of the recent increase in unlinked community cases, Singapore is unable to meet the criteria to start the Singapore-Hong Kong ATB.”
To start (or suspend) the Air Travel Bubble, the seven-day moving average of unlinked community cases in either Singapore or Hong Kong must be fewer than five.
Based on yesterday’s figure, the average daily unlinked cases in Singapore is at 4.57.
Today, the number of unlinked cases is at 11.
Unless a miracle happens, whereby contact tracers managed to find links to these 11 unlinked cases, quick maths will show that the seven-day moving average of unlinked community cases in Singapore will be above 5 from today onwards.
The SG-HK ATB is supposed to start from 26 May 2021, and while it’s technically possible that the numbers might go down in the next seven days, we all know that’s not going to happen.
As for when it’ll start again, we’re not sure, and if you’re indeed reading this in 2050, please tell us when we can finally travel to Hong Kong.
Fate of First SG-HK Air Travel Bubble: Cancelled One Day Before It Started
This doesn’t feel like a deja vu because unlike the previous bubble burst, this is something that we’ve expected.
In November 2020, the announcement was made one day before the start of the SG-HK ATB as Hong Kong reported a surge in local infections days before the ATB started.
For this latest bubble burst, we were already told last Friday that the bubble would most likely burst.
Does anyone want to be the first to contribute the phrase to Urban Dictionary?
