When Telegram Group “SG Nasi Lemak” first came to light, it shocked the entire nation.
Operating like the “red light district” of Telegram, the chat group with over 44,000 members shared pornographic and lewd images of unsuspecting women, sold vape devices and juices, sexual services, and sexual enhancement drugs.
People who thought that operating behind a screen means you’ll never be caught now have their misconceptions starkly corrected when the administrators of the chat group were arrested.
Fast forward to 2021 and now, we have an update on the case.
“SG Nasi Lemak” Admin Jailed for Advertising Sex Workers; Had 11K Obscene Images & Videos With Him
On 9 Mar 2021, 39-year-old Liong Tianwei was sentenced to a 9-week jail term and a S$26,000 fine. He is the first administrator of the group chat to be sentenced.
A married father of two, he had posted advertisements for sex workers on the now-defunct chat group.
When his home was raided back in 2019, more than 11,000 obscene images and videos were found.
In total, he pleaded guilty to six charges including possession and transmission of obscene material.
Eight other similar charges were considered during sentencing.
Gag Order Denied
Mr Liong has two sons aged 9 and 11.
According to his lawyer, RS Bajwa, Mr Liong’s wife, had asked for a gag order to protect her “very impressionable” kids from being “embarrassed and ridiculed”.
“A gag order is to protect young children, usually a victim. In this case, it’s to protect his own children from what he has done.”
Unfortunately, while the deputy prosecutor did not object to the request, it was eventually stated that there was no legal authority to prevent the media from circulating Liong’s photographs.
The judge reportedly said, “Unfortunately, the risk of embarrassment or public shaming is an inevitable consequence of the accused’s wrongdoing.”
How “SG Nasi Lemak” Began
Back in 2016, Mr Liong developed a close relationship with a sex worker from China.
The female sex worker than introduced him to another Chinese national called Hua Ge.
Hua Ge asked Mr Liong to promote several Chinese sex workers featured on an adult website called “sex727”.
Agreeing, Mr Liong went on to download pictures, posts and videos from the website and spread them on various social media platforms.
When the “SG Nasi Lemak” group was created, Mr Liong posted on the chat group with his iPhone.
It was reported that for his efforts, he would be paid S$300 to S$800 per week, given to him by different female Chinese nationals.
He was initially uncooperative with the investigation but got more cooperative after his case was referred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
On a separate note, did you know that the infamous chat group managed to “save” a woman forced into prostitution, albeit unintentionally? You can read more here.
