Sheng Siong has been having good PR for the past few months.

They managed to make a killing because of Covid-19 and decide to give extra money to their staff

And they were ousted for asking staff to go around giving money at funeral wakes

Now, Sheng Siong is on the news again, this time, unfortunately, for something not so good.

Sheng Siong Staff Cried After Being ‘Scolded’ in Public & People Have Different Opinions

On 11 Aug 2020, Facebook page All Singapore Stuff uploaded a video onto the social media platform.

It showed a man, presumedly a manager, talking to a cashier at the supermarket.

It wasn’t known which outlet the incident took place in but the pack of Sheng Siong Supermarket plastic bags indicated that it happened at a Sheng Siong outlet.

Man Scolding, Cashier Crying

It was hard to make out over the loud background music but it seems like the topic was about manning the cashier while taking inventory for the cigarettes.

The video started midway through and the cashier was already sniffling.

When the manager asked why she can’t take stock while serving customers at the same time, she said she couldn’t.

She added, while crying, that if she had been allowed to close the counter, she would’ve completed her task long ago.

He asked a fellow staff beside them to help her take inventory but was seemingly rebuffed with the excuse that the cashier was already halfway through the task.

The manager asked her what else she could do before walking off while commenting on her age.

Mixed Reactions From The Netizens

As with any issue on the internet, netizens have divided opinions on the situation.

Some felt that the manager shouldn’t have torn into the cashier when in public:

While others just took offence at the way he handled things:

But it’s not all against the manager though.

Some thought the post was trying to sensationalise the issue, especially since he wasn’t shouting:

But at the end of the day, this commenter has it right: Let Sheng Siong handle it themselves.

It’s hard not to draw conclusions from the short video (someone cried) but at the same time, we shouldn’t too.

But if there’s a lesson to learn from this, it’s that almost everyone on the streets of Singapore has an aspiration to have 1 minute of fame.

Also, it’s better not to take such videos or photos anymore because it’s considered online-shaming.

And as we all learnt, that could be taken as breaching doxxing laws.
