As Singapore’s economy slowly picks itself up after the Circuit Breaker (CB) measures were lifted, we too heard some good news on the employment front.
Retrenched workers found employment again, while more jobs are created to help the ailing economy.
More good news came with the announcement of 500 new tech job opportunities yesterday.
500 Singaporeans to be hired and trained
According to the joint press release by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Sea Limited (Sea) on October 2, Sea will hire and train 500 Singaporeans under this new programme.
The programme is expected to start before the end of this year.
Sea is a leading global consumer internet company founded in Singapore in 2009.
It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
It’s also the parent company of e-commerce platform Shopee, online game developer Garena and digital financial services provider SeaMoney.
Details Of The New Programme
This programme will benefit 500 Singaporeans, comprising of 400 entry-level and 100 mid-career (those with more than three years of working experience) jobseekers.
It involves trainees undergoing six months of on-the-job or instructor-led structured training at Shopee, in areas such as Product Management, Software Engineering and User Experience Design.
The trainees will have a mentor or project advisor within the same department.
This programme will be the largest ever TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA) Company-Led Training (CLT) programme by a Singapore-based company.
According to Channel NewsAsia, when asked about the type of people the company is looking to hire, Mr Lim Teck Yong, the head of regional operations and people team at Shopee, described the ideal applicant as one with a “strong passion for e-commerce.”
The applicant will also need to demonstrate a willingness to pick up skills in data or coding, even before applying for the job.
Though Mr Lim declined to reveal the salary range, he said that the company pays “competitive(ly), in line with the other fresh graduates.”
He also added that he hopes to keep all 500 trainees as full-time hires if they perform well.
Trainees to be paid a monthly salary
The trainees will receive a monthly salary while undergoing training.
In addition, all suitable trainees who complete the training will be employed by the business entities under Sea.
Minister for Communications and Information, Mr S Iswaran, said, “In these challenging times, the Government’s priority is to create good jobs for Singaporeans. In particular, we want to ensure that we have a strong pipeline of local tech talent equipped with the skills to secure new opportunities in the Digital Economy. Partnerships with industry players are key.”
Sea will receive subsidies for monthly salaries, training course fees and any overseas attachment costs under the tie-up.
For those who are keen to join the tech sector, this might just be the opportunity for you.
