If I were ever attacked in public, I’d stay at home, lock all the doors, and receive all my food and drinks through a doggy door.
There are some people out there who aren’t total wimps, though.
Just three weeks after he was stabbed at a promotional event in Zhongshan, China, Hong Kong actor Simon Yam returned to promote his latest movie.
The veteran actor appeared in an event in Guangzhou, Guangdong province on Sunday (Aug 11).
Yam had his right arm in a sling and was surrounded by much tighter security, according to China.org.cn.
Zhongshan stabbing
Three weeks ago, Yam appeared at an opening ceremony of an EasyHome furnishings store at the Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone in Zhongshan, Guangdong province.
As he was being interviewed on stage, a man rushed up to the stage and stabbed Yam with a knife.
There aren’t many things more terrifying than a man aggressively swinging at you with a knife.
The suspect, Chen, was later detained by the local police. Reports revealed that the man was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.
Yam sustained injuries to his abdomen and hand and is still recovering. He underwent successful surgery on the same day and said he would not file charges against his attacker after hearing the investigation report.
Back to work
After the assault, Yam said he would be more selective about his public appearances. However, not wanting to let down the backers of his latest movie Little Q, Yam appeared at a promotional event in Guangzhou.
According to China.org.cn, the film follows the life of Little Q, a Labrador trained to be a guide dog, who loyally accompanies an ill-tempered pastry chef suffering from blindness.
“‘Little Q’ resembles a story about me and my daughter. It is a very important movie for me, and the best companion movie I’ve ever made,” Yam said.
Despite his recent attack, Yam went up to the huge crowd at his event and shook hands with fans, albeit with tighter security.
The 64-year-old star did not mention the attack but said that he had managed to endure that difficult time with love and support from friends and loved ones – a theme which Yam believes Little Q reflects.
Little Q, which was originally scheduled for a July 25 release, will now be released on Sept 20 due to the incident.
