S’pore is 8th Most Attractive Country to Work in; Fewer S’poreans Now Want to Work Overseas

Last year, Singapore ranked second in a Kisi study of the most overworked cities.

Singaporeans were shocked, mostly because we expected to come in first.

This seemingly unhealthy work culture, and perhaps a lack of snow, has prompted many Singaporeans to move abroad, or at least make plans to do so.

But the Covid-19 pandemic might have changed all that.

Yes, believe it or not, Singapore is now a… desirable country to work in.

S’pore is 8th Most Attractive Country to Work in

Singapore is now the 8th most attractive place to relocate to among workers, according to a recent study.

This is largely due to the country’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The survey on workforce mobility around the world was done by Seek Asia and JobStreet. It involved 208,807 respondents from more than 190 countries.

For the first time, Singapore found its way to the top ten, after coming in 18th in 2018 and 24th in 2014.

Other countries in the top 10 include Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the UK, and the US.

Respondents who said they would like to relocate to Singapore for work were mostly from China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and Switzerland.

In addition to Singapore’s handling of the pandemic, it’s the high quality of life may also have been a draw for foreign workers, JobStreet said.

Fewer S’poreans Now Want to Work Overseas

6,280 respondents in the survey were from Singapore, most of them, citizens.

Interestingly, the survey found that much fewer Singaporeans (44%) want to seek job opportunities abroad.

This is a significant drop from 70% who wished to relocate for work in 2018, and 79% in 2014.

Is this because Singaporean bosses are suddenly being much nicer to their employees?

Ha. Sometimes I amuse myself.

It’s likely because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the unstable job market. With all the uncertainties of the pandemic, who wants to deal with such a massive life change?

The study found that those working in the media and information industry were the most willing to work abroad, with 72% of them saying they would do so.

You hear that boss? All of us might just pack up and leave the country.

Boss: Okay, please don’t forget to close the door on your way out.

For Singaporeans who still do want to move abroad for work, Australia remains the favoured destination, thanks to its work-life balance and multiculturalism.

Coming in second and third were China and Taiwan respectively.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the UK and US dropped down the rankings for countries Singaporeans wanted to work in, after coming in second and third respectively in 2018.

JobStreet said this suggests that Singaporeans take Covid-19 management seriously when assessing their options.

Well, besides work-life balance and availability of bubble tea, it’s certainly an important consideration.
