Singapore will open an embassy in Mexico City in 2026, making it the country’s first diplomatic mission in the Spanish-speaking world.
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam announced the move on 1 Dec 2025 during his first state visit to Mexico as president.
Singapore’s First Embassy in Spanish-Speaking World to Open in Mexico
The new embassy will be Singapore’s second in Latin America, following the establishment of its first mission in Brazil in 2012.
President Tharman made the announcement at a joint press conference with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City.

The Singapore president is on a four-day state visit to Mexico from 30 Nov to 3 Dec 2025.
Both countries are commemorating 50 years of diplomatic ties this year.
President Tharman said the decision reflects Singapore’s confidence in Mexico’s future and will allow Singapore to engage with Mexico’s leaders, officials, business community, and cultural community more actively.
Ms Sheinbaum noted that the Singapore embassy would be the 87th in Mexico, reflecting growing international interest in the country.
Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on 2 Dec that the embassy will strengthen bilateral economic and people-to-people links between Singapore and Mexico. It will also enhance consular support for Singaporeans in Mexico.
Mexico has maintained a resident embassy in Singapore since Jun 1990.
Pacific Alliance Free Trade Agreement and Bilateral Cooperation
During their meeting on 1 Dec, President Tharman was hosted to lunch by President Sheinbaum at the National Palace.
Both leaders affirmed the warm and friendly relations between the two countries.
President Sheinbaum committed to having Mexico ratify the Pacific Alliance-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, which was signed on 26 Jan 2022.
The agreement will enhance trade and productive investment for both countries and help strengthen inter-regional connectivity between Southeast Asia and Latin America.
Singapore is set to become the first associated state of the Pacific Alliance after the agreement is ratified by all four member states: Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.
President Sheinbaum welcomed Singaporean companies’ interest in investing in Mexico across sectors covered in Plan Mexico, her national development plan. These sectors include technology, innovation, ports, oil and gas.
Both presidents witnessed the signing of two memoranda of understanding on coral reef restoration and international development cooperation.
The leaders discussed other areas of mutual interest, including technology, innovation, fintech, environmental protection, and food security.
President Tharman extended an invitation for President Sheinbaum to make a state visit to Singapore.
