It’s becoming increasingly apparent that local marathoner Soh Rui Yong isn’t just a genius on the running track…
But a mastermind in the marketing field as well.
So lest you’re unaware, it all started with a challenge: run 2.4km in under seven minutes, and Soh will give you S$700 in cash as well as stacks of sports drinks.
Lest you’ve yet to read about it, you can peruse more here.
Things then escalated when a local chicken rice boss doubled down on the bet, offering 700 additional packets of chicken rice to the hypothetical winner.
And from thereon, the situation has been nothing short of hectic as brands of all variations chipped in with enviable prizes of their own.
Soh Rui Yong’s 2.4km Challenge Now Has Numerous Prizes, Including 700GB From Circles.Life
Just yesterday (10 September 2021), local marathoner Soh Rui Yong posted an eye-opening entry on his Facebook page:
The prize pool for the initial challenge has since been upgraded… by leaps and bounds.
So as mentioned above, it all started with S$700 in cold, hard cash, as well as 700 bottles of Pocari Sweat.
It then went on to include 700 packets of chicken rice, sponsored by OK Chicken Rice.
At this point, one will be forgiven for wanting to participate in the run… badly. After all, there’s only so much seduction we can withstand.
But it seems that participation is slowly becoming mandatory by this point.
As of yesterday, the prize pool has extended to include the following perks as well:
- Two x 90 min deep tissue sports massage by Hock Lay Lim
- A Suunto S$500 watch by Pocari
- A S$700 FnB voucher by Smoobar
And last (we doubt that this is actually the last though) but certainly not least…
A one-time 700GB and 700 min talk time add-on by Circles.Life.
Talk about overkill.
The Initial Prize Has Also Been Upgraded
That’s not all either.
Apparently, the initial prize, which consisted of S$700 in cold hard cash and 700 bottles of Pocari Sweat, has been doubled.
So apart from all the sponsored perks, you will also be getting S$1,400 cash and 1,400 bottles of Pocari Sweat.
While we’re clueless as to what you can possibly do with 1,400 bottles, what we do know is that somehow, Soh has achieved the unthinkable:
He has converted doubts and suspicions into an absolute advertisement for Pocari.
And Netizens Have Caught On
Netizens may have previously applauded Soh for his heroics on the running track, but it seems that they’re now applauding him for a different reason:
His genius in the marketing field.
“As someone mentioned & wondering…” one netizen raved. “You’re a marketing genius!!!”
And another concurred.
“MARKETING GENIUS,” the Netizen wrote.
In addition, the post has since garnered over 310 shares and 480 likes & reactions. If you were to include his previous Facebook posts, as well as posts on other platforms, the numbers would have more than quadrupled.
What’s more; he has also inspired local news outlets such as Mothership to write about it, which surely accounts for a lot more attention as well.
And it’s not just empty advertisement as well; numerous netizens have, regardless of intent, chosen to take up the challenge.
So in a sense, Soh really won this game.

Meanwhile, you can register here for a shot at the total prize pool.
We’re expecting it to grow even more by the stipulated deadline.
