If you were to walk up to any resident in Singapore and tell them that we’re one of the most overworked countries in the world, you’d likely get one of two answers:

  1. Abuden?
  2. Are you new here?

It’s no secret that the people of Singapore spend a lot of time in the office, as many studies in recent years have confirmed.

So, it’s perhaps unsurprising that when a bedding manufacturer in the UK ranked the most ‘tired’ countries in the world, Singapore won the gold medal.

S’pore Ranked As ‘World’s Most Tired Country’

Singapore is fatigued and everyone knows it.

In a list of the world’s 15 most fatigued countries, UK bedding manufacturer Sleepseeker ranked Singapore as number 1.

Yay?

Countries were given a “fatigue score” out of 10, and Singapore earned a 7.20.

Coming in second is Mexico with 7.01, followed by Brazil with 6.28. The other two Asian countries in the list – Japan and China – were ranked fifth and ninth respectively.

  1. Singapore – 7.20
  2. Mexico – 7.01
  3. Brazil – 6.28
  4. USA – 5.57
  5. Japan – 5.32
  6. UK – 4.82
  7. New Zealand – 4.74
  8. Australia – 4.72
  9. China – 4.59
  10. Canada – 4.39
  11. Italy – 3.85
  12. Switzerland – 3.12
  13. Germany – 3.11
  14. France – 2.44
  15. The Netherlands – 2.01

So, why are we so damn tired?

Working Hours & the Internet

There seem to be two main reasons for this.

The first is also the most obvious: we’re overworked af.

In fact, in another Sleepseeker list of countries that work the most hours per year, Singapore came in second, just 17 hours behind Mexico in the first place.

Coming in third was China, followed by the US and New Zealand. Perhaps the most surprising thing about this list is that Japan – known for its extreme work weeks – came in sixth.

  1. Mexico – 2,255
  2. Singapore – 2,238
  3. China – 2,174
  4. USA – 1,757
  5. New Zealand – 1,752
  6. Japan – 1,738
  7. Italy – 1,723
  8. Brazil – 1,709
  9. Canada – 1,696
  10. UK – 1,670
  11. Australia – 1,613
  12. Switzerland – 1,590
  13. France – 1,514
  14. The Netherlands -1,430
  15. Germany – 1,354

As previously mentioned, excessive work hours was just one of the reasons for our constant fatigue.

Sleepseeker’s fatigue score was based on a number of different factors, namely:

  1. The average amount of time slept above or below recommended 8 hours
  2. Amount of screen time per day
  3. The average number of hours spent at work per year
  4. Number of searches of sleep-related terms per 100,000 users

They obtained this information from sites like Statista and Wikipedia.

The Most Time Spent On The Internet

It appears that when it comes to countries that spend the most time on the internet, Singapore is once again not far from the top.

Coming in first is Brazil with an average of 9 hours and 29 minutes every day, followed by Mexico with around eight hours.

Singapore, in third, spends an average of 7 hours and two minutes daily on the internet, according to stats from BusinessFibre.co.uk.

So, working long hours coupled with an inordinate amount of screen time may be why we feel tired all the time.

Another Possible Reason

The anxieties of the COVID-19 pandemic may also be playing a part, as a recent study showed that almost 60% of Singaporeans aren’t sleeping well.

The reasons for our constant tiredness are manifold, but one thing is certain: we need more rest.

While it may not always be possible to reduce our working hours, we can put our phones away in the night while in bed to get a good night’s sleep. Your body will thank you for it the next morning.
