To some people, the closing of Singapore Pools outlets means that they’ve effectively lost their job, dreams and future.
Because that weekly purchase of those pink slips allows them to see their future.
On Sunday, Singapore Pools announced that online betting of sports and horse-racing (overseas) will resume.
But that’s not news; that’s like saying Circuit Breaker is moving into Phase One. Same same but different.
During the virtual press conference yesterday, a Zaobao reporter asked the question that’s in everyone’s mind:
Can Singapore Pools branches be reopened? Would 4D be back?
Lawrence Wong: Switch in Mindset
For a start, this is how we should think of the two Phases.
In Phase One, the default is that most retail businesses are closed, and only selected businesses can be opened (e.g. supermarkets).
In Phase Two, the default is that most retail businesses are open, and only selected business must be closed (e.g. cinemas).
In other words, it’s a leap to normalcy but with safe-distancing measures.
And so, Minister Lawrence Wong said, “Other than those (like cinemas), we expect all other businesses to be open at the beginning of Phase Two. That would include the ones you’ve cited, whether it’s massage, spa, 4D outlets…they’re all in similar settings….they will be allowed to reopen in Phase Two.”
Now I know why he looks so handsome yesterday.
In other words, it’s likely that if Singapore Pools chooses to, they can open up the dreams of many Singaporeans on Friday, and we can finally visualise ourselves in our mansions again this weekend.
